The work I do with archaeology reminds me daily We watch the genocide in Gaza with horror But we are the beneficiaries of one of the worst genocides ever - right here on Turtle Island We are not guilty but we can at least be humble and honor what was lost

Today’s Canadian painting is “The Red Maple” painted by A Y Jackson in 1914. This is one of Canada’s best-loved and most-recognized paintings.
For those too young or normal to get the reference to Walt Disney's frozen head, it's from a Robot Chicken episode from twenty or so years ago I'm sure it can be found online... the political context it's set in is not going to be familiar to most though

![This is a conceptual structural model (right) of the main mound at the Letchworth site [8JE337] at the time of its construction, ca. 400 CE. It sits atop a large pre-existing two-meter-high platform, and incorporates a pre-existing conical mound, also atop the two-meter platform. The model is derived from extensive study of a 3D model (left) of the existing mound created from LIDAR/topo data. View is from the south-southwest.
The two-meter platform is depicted as it exists in the present day. The two mounds are computer-generated and then scaled slightly to match the existing mound, so the contour lines on them may not represent precisely one foot in elevation. Since the northeast section of the mound has been scarred in recent times, likely for fill dirt, that corner of the main model overhangs the base there. No attempt has been made to include the so-called "ramp" structure on the north face.
The three exposed sides of the conical mound would have been filled out to match the pyramidal architecture of the new main mound. Evidence of this is apparent on the erosion patterns of the base where the new southeast and southwest corners of the small mound were built out.
It thus appears the location was in use as a ceremonial center for some time before the main mound was built; visual evidence points to the possibility that the platform and conical mound may well date to 4000 BP or earlier.
