It’s the way they talk about how fast they all grow up, not realizing there’s a boy over there whom the world threw heart first into the ocean and told him that drowning is also part of living, and how he came to be with water in his lungs, part shadow, all shadow, some days more, others less, wondering how sharks were left swimming in the streets, and how there are days he feels the water drying up, leaving him to breathe fire and misery instead.

It hurts.

And he thinks that maybe everything burns, was always burning, each moment simply waiting for another phoenix to rise so that someone somewhere down the line can say it all had meaning in the end.

It still hurts.

But he reaches for the stars, they all do down here, and he still can’t forget the way the moon made magic of his life and how the words leapt off the pages, pulling him into places he never thought he could go, just like that name bigger than any of his dreams had ever been. He was once sunlight on midnight’s wings, and there had been dirt on his feet and hunger in his stomach, but there stood another door, shattered glass mostly. But open is open, you know. You see the streets had taught him that, a different lesson from the world and her ocean, and you took opportunities before they crowded around your grave and wept for all you’d never been.

He’d never been much.

Oh, but he believed it for a moment, maybe a little more. Time gets funny when memory starts talking, but he remembers the water in his chest and the heaviness of trying to breath (again), not quite as bad as the knowing, how all things move, keep moving, and there are some firebirds better left fizzling out in the ashes. More potential for the burying. He could have been everything. They cry over that, too, he’s realized. That’s what some of them say, anyway. Dead is dead, but you knew that, right?

He’s still got a heart beating in his chest, though.

Comment left on AO3: "Oh wow, thank you so much for writing this! It is exactly the kind of writing for which I dive into original works again and again. It very well may be one of the most impressive things I've read in here, actually. It was absolutely amazing, from start to finish—I loved the characters, the worldbuilding, the style. I was hooked literally from the first sentence (like, how can you not be, when it begins with stealing a dragon egg, haha), and I'm so happy you finished it.

I have no idea how you managed to write the slowest of slow burns while having the characters kiss so (relatively) early in the story, and without it ever feeling infuriating. I mean, I was screaming "just kiss already!" at the screen during the final chapters, but that's par for the course for the genre, lol.

Your language is so evocative and entertaining, if that makes sense. The similies are imaginative and always on point. Tbh, while I was reading, it fired up my creative mind and inspired me to be more elaborate and intentional with my own prose :D So thank you for that too, haha."

Today, we’re publicly sharing that Dual Wield Studio has reached the difficult decision to conduct layoffs. This is not done lightly; our core ethos prioritizes taking care of our team above all.
Candidly, layoffs reflect a failure of leadership sufficiently planning and acting in service of the team.

Last year, our current Leadership became aware of our company having operated at a significant income deficit for several years. We informed our team of this concern, and did what we could to mitigate it as much as possible, including the seniormost highest-paid members of Leadership deferring significant owed pay in order to extend more funds to our team.

Despite this, without more drastic action, our trajectory endangered our ability to reasonably continue to fairly compensate our team or support them in the event of financial insolvency.
Layoffs are that drastic action.

Full-time employees impacted by the layoff will receive 6 months severance pay, 6 months medical benefits, and 6 months of tailored outplacement support, with comparable severance offered to our incubation business project contributor. If we cannot continue to fairly employ people, we believe we should at least do what we can to help them find their next job.

We’re heartbroken to send away folks who have been part of what makes our team so special, and are committed to doing all we can to sustain Dual Wield Studio by learning from our mistakes to do better.
