Previously on twitter. Bird stuff, #worstbirdpic's, and carbs.
First warbler of fall migration! Sorry, no blurry pics for you. Only got brief looks but it was maybe a Chestnut-sided with its ironically bright switcheroo fall plumage. If you can't get outside today, here is some armchair birding for you. Find the bird! It’s nice to have an easy one, huh? 🪶
True story: There’s a construction project nearby that keeps having timeline setbacks, and the reason is always the same: “They found more graves.”
Unsurprisingly, my trip to Kansas included some good donuts. 3 places in 4 days—this is me proud of myself. Lots of good stuff there. 🍩🍩🍩
Spent a couple days in NE Kansas last week and added a few year-birds. One of my faves was the Dickcissel—lots of them, actually—which were all over the wetland areas. Love these sturdy vigorous musical characters! 🪶
Sorry I’ve been so quiet and boring here lately. It’s hot and the birds are hiding and the news is depressing and I’m just staying home working on my project to get people to stop saying “ways in which” when they can just say “ways.”
🦬 It’s National Grasslands Week, & you bet your grass we are celebrating! So let’s get down to grass tax: Tell your Senators to keep the Horticulture Title of the U.S. Farm Bill free of pro-pesticide language! abcbirds.info/3SHhBkf
If you're a bird looking for a meal I suggest stopping by Lake Erie right now. Total mayfly buffet. 🪶
Text three people whom you haven't texted in a while. Just to say hi. I bet they'd like hearing from you. I'll do it if you do it. #text3people
Went to Florida this weekend for some birding ….no, jk, we went to northern freaking Ohio, where we found Glossy freaking Ibises cavorting with Black-necked Stilts. Just fyi, that’s a new thing. <Cough-#climatechange-cough> 🪶
I'm digging through my spring migration pics and vids, and among all the blurry warblers were a lot of fantastic Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. They must be so confused that they're not the stars of migration season. Love these guys. 🪶
I hadn’t seen a cuckoo all year so imagine my delight when this beautiful Yellow-billed Cuckoo appeared. This cool bird flies all the way from South America to spend its summers here—every appearance a small miracle. This is my best and only pic. Another tragi-comic #worstbirdpic, sigh. 🪶
Saw a sorta rare bird at our park this morning and had to take a pic. Or 15 pics, each terriblurer than the last. (Blue Grosbeak! Pretty unusual for urban central Ohio.) 🪶
Two minutes in the deciduous woods of southeast Ohio. We never saw either of them, but they both sang constantly. 🪶
Another cat eviction. These rents are out of control!
Ever since I noticed the blue eyes of the Double-crested Cormorant, I can't stop looking. (Fortunately the cormorant is a known exhibitionist.) 🪶
We’ve reached that annual episode of birding when it suddenly becomes less visual and more aural. Don’t fight it. Just surrender. Not pictured: Acadian Flycatcher, Eastern Towhee, Blackpoll Warbler, Wood Thrush, Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, ... 🪶
It’s Female Bird Day! I’ve been sitting on this vid til this day: a fem. Rose-breasted Grosbeak having some #girldinner after arriving in Ohio from the Tropics. (the science: “When Female Birds Are Overlooked, Conservation Suffers“ www.audubon.org/magazine/whe...) 🪶
Today is Female Bird Day. Often outshined by flashier male counterparts, female birds have different biologies and behaviors, which makes overlooking them detrimental to wildlife conservation. www.audubon.org/magazine/whe...

It’s flycatcher season! ID tips: 1) Find elusive flycatcher lurking in the woods. 2) Consult apps, books, internet, passers-by, and/or chosen god for answers. Nope. 3) Quietly approach bird and ethically collect a DNA sample. You’re almost done. 4) Set up your field-case DNA sequencer… 🪶
For those who can’t get outside today, here is some armchair birding for you. Pic taken today. Deep in the woods of Ohio sat an exotic tropic migrant. Try to find it! (Sometimes it's nice to have an easy win, right?) 🪶
