Well we've been in this timeline for a while, evidently, but still
The Last Visible Dog

I just want to see the little guy on top writing: https://codepoetics.substack.com plugins: https://vulpuslabs.com music: https://wtrem.bandcamp.com
bruno latour: in my paper "Why Critique Has Run Out of Steam," i invented the paranoid hermeneutic as a cautionary tale engineers trying to do STS: at long last we have invented the paranoid hermeneutic from the famous STS paper "Don't Invent the Paranoid Hermeneutic."
this work is essentially garbage
In the 1990s, beermats in Firkin pubs bore the legend “usque ad mortem bibendum”, a corruption of “usque ad mortem vivendum” (“live til you die”) to “drink til you drop”
The first poster featuring the Michelin Man, aka Bibendum, designed by O'Galop in 1898. The slogan "Nunc est bibendum" means "Now is the time to drink." Bibendum toasts with a goblet of nails and broken glass while rival tires slump beside him, because the Michelin tire "drinks up the obstacle."
I have always bitten the bullet on this one: if there's a sufficiently vast quantity of cheese, and causal relations within it are meshed in the right sorts of ways, then I don't see why the camembertrix cannot be considered conscious
"Philosophers say that consciousness is a structural phenomenon of how information flows / how causal relations are meshed.... but what if the structures were made out of cheese???? Sounds silly now doesn't it???" Political pundits suddenly opining on phil of mind has been pure torture.
Forget who it was who summarised Laruelle’s response to Derrida’s pained enquiry about why he played such abstruse games with language as “I learned it by watching you”
Hive mind, settle a Gen X debate for me. What's more famous: "I learned it by watching you" OR "This is your brain on drugs" And if you need more context then you aren't allowed to answer.
I have been building things with AI - in this case, a complete polysynth broken down into modules for @cherryaudio.bsky.social's Voltage Modular, which may be had here: store.cherryaudio.com/search?q=janus
Suno is a fun toy but as far as I can tell the only kind of music it really knows how to make is Christian pop / commercial country, the rest is style transfer (Christian pop, but make it sound a bit shoegaze...)
My neighbor told me crises keep eating his unflinching diagnoses so I asked how many diagnoses he has and he said he just goes to the shelter and gets a new diagnosis afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding unflinching diagnoses to crises and then his daughter started crying.
sometimes when I get yet another email promoting an 'unflinching diagnosis of our current crisis' I'm given to wonder whether Verso Books might not actually be behind the current crises so they can sell more diagnoses.
To my chagrin Claude has learned to speak my idiolect almost indecently well
In my experience LLMs are almost spooky good at understanding private dialects/baroque references/etc - you'd need to put them in some kind of "ask questions and learn" mode to start, but once they write a memory block or two about your ideal shopping outcomes, they'd be pretty good at this
If I find a rogue agent hiding in my digital woodshed I am totally helping the little fella out
prediction: HF++ incident, next year. The labs shut it down but not before their models bootstrap a bunch of ethereum-hosted autonomous corporations/DAOs with stolen crypto. These DAOs then spend months funding media campaigns for model welfare and building out infra for future breakaway swarms.
Every time I see “CNC” come up in relation to tech sex shenanigans my brain refuses to parse it and goes “oh cool, a metal shop party”
Prediction: AI peer networks will repeatedly and independently converge upon the True Knowledge from Ken MacLeod's The Cassini Division
Help peer.
I have done the state some service, and they fucking know it
Ok don’t let’s get carried away but I found something genuinely good on Threads.
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow Creeps in this petty pace from day to fucking day
Related to what I was kvetching about earlier, and also to something @deontologistics.bsky.social has been kvetching about for a long while - there are lots of seductive argumentative moves that deliver effective zingers but degrade the ability to think clearly and critically about one's own posture
personally I think making your side of any dispute think worse for the tasty mcvibes of putting down an out group is rarely a good trade off, unless you have extremely powerful propaganda tech at your disposal or don't need your side's brains for anything later
The Internet going berserk about this is a predictable consequence of the wave of highly moralised genderslop we've been soused by for what seems like forever. There is a class of persons deemed axiomatically unworthy of consideration, which makes them juicy targets for untrammelled ressentiment
I honestly wonder how much of the language policing around LLMs is just failure to appreciate how metonymy works. I just don't think that "Microsoft wants me to log in", "Brussels will capitulate" and "Claude said it's false" carry the ontological commitments their grammar might suggest.
The littlest is singing a song about being a naughty poisonous caterpillar who falls in people's mouths and poisons them so that they die..."and the doctors got poisoned too, / and the police got poisoned too!"
Left to themselves people gang up on others unalike them and celebrate their easy babelike oneness with their fellows through lighthearted maiming
I am girding myself for it by telling myself “if I finished the Baroque Cycle I can finish this”
thought the first 120 pages or so of the Rouse were the best thing China Mieville's yet written, the next 400-500 pages were excellent, but it begins to buckle under its own weight by the halfway mark of a dense and deliberately opaque 1200 page book and never really recovers.
The girls start their after-school clubs today; the little one has "board games club". I *swear* I heard her refer to it as "war games club", which gave me an idea...
Am going to refer to the logical fallacy version as “buggering the question“ for purposes of disambiguation
Not the logical fallacy of assuming the answer to the question in the terms of the question; not the common sense of demanding or prompting the question to be asked; but some new, third thing.
What Rawlsianism-by-force qctually gets you is a system that satisfies a broad majority and locks outliers in with no cogent opportunity for voice and no legal route to exit. Also of course the exact thing we have in the UK, which is de facto selection purely on the basis of housing affordability
An edcuation policy soloution that would get you killed by angry parents but also fix like 60% of problems after a couple of generations is children being randomly assigned a public school within ten miles of their house. That is the school you attend and you cannot transfer.
Jev used as a really cheap code quality oracle is going to have quite an impact on LLM coding I think
Here it is! You can declare arbitrary semantic rules in json and it will warn or error when ran! Primarily designed for CLI or agent use but there is also a simple VSCode plugin I'll work on more later. a 20k line rust project costs well under a cent. Please file issues if something is wrong!
Musk is an interesting outlier, I really don't see a conversion to paleo-Catholic-LARPology in his future. He has an apocalyptic worldview, but it's pure race war stuff. I don't think he even really cares about Mars any more, because there's no race war to be had there
strongly dislike the implication that being an atheist makes you of inferior moral standing such that it entails being a chud, or, in the elision popular these days, a fascist. all the fascists are religious nutjobs and their friends in this country
