In 1982, a maths teacher in Birmingham set up a company to make educational software, staffed by his former students. Five years later, one of their games hit #1 in the UK sales chart. This is the odd story of how they got from A to B. New post on Run for Gold: www.superchartisland.com/run-for-gold

Looks like the Sony PR team has begun its consent manufacturing operation among the media in the past 24 hours. I wonder how many other gaming outlets and influencers this week will also happen to put up posts/articles/videos declaring that eliminating physical media from consoles is good, actually?

Tweet from the official Gizmodo account posted 16 hours ago linking to an article with the headline “Game Discs Deserve to Die.” The accompanying photo is that of a hand with painted fingernails placing a silver-bottomed disc into a PlayStation 5.Tweet from the official Polygon account posted 23 hours ago stating “I won’t mourn Playstation discs” with a link to a self-styled “spicy takes” op-ed column. The accompanying photo is of a PlayStation 4 ejecting a copy of 2013’s Killzone Shadow Fall, the first PS4 title to sell over one million copies whose servers were nevertheless shut down in 2022 such that all you can do with a copy these days is play its lackluster single player campaign.

How did a developer that started as a war game specialist end up making a game about a cycling race? Why did the game climb to UK #1 months after the real life race finished? And what does all that have to do with the price of milk? New post on Milk Race: www.superchartisland.com/milk-race

Final Fantasy VI [Final Fantasy III] (SNES) review | Super Nintendo

Final Fantasy VI Super Nintendo SNES review: The last FF of the 16-bit era and Squaresoft didn't disappoint. One of gaming's greatest RPGs, with a memorable world, combat engine, and villain in Kefka.

Sony's decision to cease physical copies in 2028 is bizarre, not least because of the timing. Why give a date, rather than say "from PS6 onwards"? The PS5's library has tons of disc games, which will abruptly stop well before the end of its run. I'd imagine this is very annoying for collectors.

🟡 Mafia (2004, Xbox) 🟢 REVIEW: @steadyspheretpe.bsky.social revisits Lost Heaven and a 1930s-set open world title, ported to Xbox in 2004. A decent sandbox effort, or living in the long shadow cast by Grand Theft Auto? Read or watch the review 😊👇 #gaming 🔴 www.thepixelempire.net/mafia-xbox-r...

What makes you think your digital games are safe? Once again, Studio Canal is pulling movie licenses. Purchases to be outright erased from libraries. It's the same that happened in 2022 and during the Funimation-Crunchyroll merger. Digital is rental! (via Twitter user somatyk)
