"Each day of the war the ingenuity of the fighting armies is taxed for some new invention, some new appliance or some new method of handling an old appliance. The many inventions which have been born of the war are remarkable. Though armored trains have been used almost since the beginning of steam railroads the Austrians devised this new method of use. They planted a modern rapid fire gun behind an armored plate on the rear end of the locomotive and used it with telling success against the Russians in Galicia. Now many more engines are being equipped in similar manner." https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85042242/1915-09-24/ed-1/seq-1/

1/6🧵Aug 4 1918 Photos of German A7V Tank Mephisto (s/n 506) The A7V Tank was Imperial Germany's only Tank but only around 20 were produced. Instead they used Beute Panzers or captured Allied Tanks. Commander Lt Heinz Theunissen dubbed Tank "Mephisto" a demon from German folklore

Mephisto (Marvel Comics) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mephisto_(Marvel_Comics)AWM E02876 - August 4 1918 "At the 5th Tank Brigade demonstration ground, Vaux-en-Amienois, France, Australian soldiers inspect Mephisto, a German A7V tank. After being bogged and abandoned on the battlefield it was recovered on 14 July 1918 by the 26th Battalion and the 1st Gun Carrier company, 5th Brigade of Tanks. After been recovered from the battlefield and studied by the Allies, Mephisto was handed over to the Australian War Records Section for despatch to Australia.

The photograph is taken from the left rear quarter. Scattered on the ground are elements from the tank's interior, including a fuel tank and radiator (left hand front quarter) and a machine gun mount (under the rear towing hook). Resting on its end against the crew cupola on the tank's rear upper surface can be seen the underside of a portion of the tank's driving compartment flooring. The horizontal bar visible in the photograph is connected to the driver's steering wheel (on the other side of the plate). Turning the wheel throttles one engine up and the other down, and thus steers the tank."
