Thinking maybe I need to add "how does modern naval power projection work" to the list of military primers alongside "the USN is a load-bearing element of the modern global economy." It is, in fact, very hard to send a meaningful amount of naval combat power around the globe.

2) Logistics and power projection. China has been doing a long-range anti-piracy mission off of Somalia for years now and the consistent task-group size is 1 DDG, 1 FFG, and 1 replenishment ship. Often those replenishment ships are on their fourth, seventh, ninth, etc. deployments.

Just after the battle of Gettysburg, Lt. Frank Haskell of Wisconsin set down his memories of the fight as he had witnessed it from his perspective as a division commander’s aide de camp. I like to revisit it every year because of the way Haskell uses his words to paint a vivid picture for the reader
