Blaming this on the player is both cruel and wrong. This is a system problem. D&D is a really hard game to learn. It's complex and if you play badly it's not fun. You need a high level of system mastery to understand what's going on. So of course players are resistant to learning a new game!
Realizing a large part of D&D play culture (expecting the DM to do everything) and insistence on not learning any other systems is because the average D&D player is functionally illiterate and incapable of reading a rulebook themselves
Did I mention this is also a fundraiser for the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota? Thank you to the person who just donated $25!!
I already did this: Inspired by books like Harriet the Spy, Encyclopedia Brown, and Nancy Drew, Kid Detectives is a game of middle school kids in the mid 1980s solving mysteries in the sleepy town of Ida Falls. Who stole the soccer coach’s lucky hat? Who spread the vicious rumors about a friend?
I asked my wife is I should write a manifesto and she said I need to manifest a job.

Okay. You have unfortunately been hit with the curse that makes you adapt a work you liked as a kid into a ttrpg. What thing are you adapting?
You're not a real game designer until you've published seven manifestos.
Big news! My Mausritter module is now Pay What You Want. BUT, and this is big, it's still a fundraiser for the Palestine Children's Relief Fund. I've set up a custom donation page for us. We can track how much we've donated as well. thisisvictor.itch.io/the-lonely-oak

I think it's bad form to discuss problems without also discussion solutions. A thread of alternatives to "GM picks the target number."
I did one already but I got another: Asking the GM to arbitrarily pick a target number is bad game design.

What’s a TTRPG One Tree Hill you’re willing to die on?
The entirety of my experience with Dungeons & Dragons is a singular session of 4th edition. Which barely even counts as D&D.
What admission would kill your Grognard cred? I've never actually read the Elric books. I just bluff it from the knowledge picked up via Hawkwind and Blue Oyster Cult.
Shit like this is the only reason I still use social media. *chef's kiss*

Wait are you telling me the PbtA ISN'T just "narrative gurps"? Oh wow.
I had a funny conversation with somebody once, years ago, on a different website. They were like, Look, PbtA creators, let's get together and standardize our names for things! and I was like, If we're voting, I'm voting against!
Teaser for my current project, a Daggerheart one shot. Imagine the placeholder sketch is actually a beautiful drawing of a dragon sleeping on a building.
In the medieval ages people in Rome forgot what The Colosseum was used for. They thought it was a temple. Half of it had fallen down and people were living in the other half. The catacombs below the the structure were abandoned and collapsing. Yes, this is an OSR adventure.
Tension is a better than surprise in RPGs and I will die on this hill.
Stonetop is the kind of game that makes me dream of an in person gaming group. I want to get together with friends, take turns masking dinner, and play Stonetop for years.
In the mesoamerican city of Chavín de Huantar, priests used hidden pipes to roar at visitors walking through the temple. A priest sat in a secret chamber behind a fierce stone statue and acted as their god's voice. Anyway, that's a freebie for your next OSR game.

Name your fav Table Top RPG.
Some guy on reddit: "This game sucks, I didn't have fun! Also, I didn't use any of the game's core mechanics." Sigh. Can you imagine if people played any other game like this? "Poker sucks! We never dealt out the card, it was so boring."

I'm procrastinating my day job SO . . . One like = one niche indie RPG I think more people should know about.
I got 2000s indie kid. Which considering that I have print copies of Poisin'd, Inspectres, Shab-Al-Hiri Roach and Dogs in the Vineyard seems like a pretty accurate description. The survey is completely unhinged tho.
I got Modern Girly (gender neutral), and while it doesn't sound right, that's how it goes.
That scene at the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where Jay and Silent Bob travel around the country beating up people who wrote mean things about them on the internet, except it's the Bakers telling people that their PbtA opinions are wrong.
My day job (self-employed) includes wandering around the internet and keeping track what people say about PbtA. Occasionally a new one will pop up. Lately I've been seeing "in a PbtA game, you shouldn't be rolling dice that often anyway." I'm like, you shouldn't what now? Where did THIS come from?
But how will I know if I'm winning in my collaborative storytelling game?
People are arguing if not altering the gm to wolves having pack tactics is cheating or not and holy shit just play a good game. Y’all keep arguing while playing a dogshit game. Be more interesting. Play more interesting games.
Explaining how to play TTRPGs that don't have initiate systems always feels like I'm explaining how to have a conversation to someone who has never talked to another human before. "How do you determine who goes first?" Um, you just take turns? Sometimes I go first, sometimes you do? Like adults?
Game pitch, from Science Fiance and myself: Apollo 47 with arguing. You are scientists in a fictional field of research, at a contentious conference panel. Get a stack of random scientific journals and quote random sections at each other, using them to prove your point. Play until exhausted.
