It’s a shock to realise that switching to a heat pump locks you into electricity prices in a way that house on oil/gas heating doesn’t. If more had heat pumps, with a more predictable, fixed annual cost, people would be rioting over why the price of gas is kept artificially low due to subsidies.

British politicians & journalists don't think of themselves as European. Until recently, they invoked 'Europe' as shorthand for the EU, which the UK is no longer a member of. I've noticed its meaning shift to refer to the continent, despite the UK's geographic fixity.
