A whole life grumpy and spiky. The fangtooth Anoplogaster cornuta is a #deepsea icon but have you ever seen a baby? 1st from Andrew's eel expedition. 2nd image CSIRO specimen.
An amazing mug appears in the fish room! A tribute to our very own Andrew from the legendary @stickfigurefish.bsky.social Andrew ordered some fishy mugs and a mysterious 3rd mug was in the box! Check out our latest #podcast #episode to hear Andrew sharing is love of #anglerfish
This week's highlight was this beautiful lass. A Himantolophus. Doll-like eyes and an elaborate fishing lure (the esca). It came with a note for Andrew. He's an obsessive. If you don't believe me, check out the latest @deepseapod.com episode all about #deepsea #anglerfish
Last week's processing was all about the ghost #sharks (#chimera). These are from fisheries bycatch. Love these ancient prototypes that are still rocking it in the deep sea. Their snouts are stitched with a variety of sensors that allow them to detect buried prey.
Oh lordy, here he comes!🎣🐟 For our latest #podcast episode on the #deepsea #anglerfish, who better to talk to than some of their biggest fans. James Mclaine and our very own Andrew Stewart are gushing about these #deepocean specialists. Listen here: www.deepseapod.com/episodes/069
New episode! We had Dr. Alan Jamieson from the @deepseapod.com on to talk about exploring the deep sea and how it is alarmingly close to what the first astronauts and cosmonauts went through. Also a lot of fun chatting on the different engineering behind spacecraft and submersibles.

Last night I was down a rabbit hole of why fish can't exist deeper than around 8000 meters and I realized that the deepest a fish has ever gone in the ocean and survived was in a submersible. The fish were people. All vertebrates are fish. I hope this helps with ~~the horrors~~
The ocean is too deep for fish.
The day before heading out to #Antarctica to look for the #colossalsquid with our low-light/far-red camera, I caught the #IronLungMovie and loved it. Now I'm in an inhospitable environment looking for monsters in an ocean of blood 😐. #ProjectESCA #ironlung #deepsea
The shapes of #PancakeIce are really satisfying. They remind me of jellyfish, giant waterlilies and some sort of paper sculpture. #Antarctica #RossSea
Eerily peaceful moments at 3am off Ross Island. #antarctica is a magical place of extremes. @autsquidsquad.bsky.social
A new record for #projectESCA, down to 700 m deep from a Zodiac using a pot-hauler and a battery. This project is the embodiment of #number8wire. @pure-ocean.bsky.social @autsquidsquad.bsky.social #Antarctic #Antarctica #RossSea

Too many cookies over Christmas? Why not use a smaller #cookiecuttershark to cut back? Adorable little horror.
#anglerfish are so gross and scary! Oh really, have you seen the babies? They look like a furious peeled grape! #deepsea
