Similarly, liberal (English) anglicans who see belief in God as optional, and who forget that our beliefs about God also shape our beliefs about what it means to be a nation. No shared theology --> no shared political theology --> national questions are difficult to engage with as a church.

Reflecting that when liberal Quakers see belief in God as optional, we forget that our beliefs about God also shape our beliefs about what it means to be human. No shared theology means no shared theological anthropology. Which makes many ethical questions difficult to engage with as a community.

This is an unhinged reading from Peterson - and I'd note that the Gospel text is insistent that Judas is motivated not by genuine concern for the poor, but by greed (he has his hand in the common purse). Tom's also right that the brazen serpent is from a completely different story to that of Cain.

Judas wasn't "suicidally empathic" in the least; he was a liar and a thief as scripture clearly says. His ultimate sin was despair. What do Cain and Abel have to do with the brazen serpent? Why does any Christian (or Jew or atheist or anyone else for that matter) take Jordan B. Peterson seriously?

Take note, sir:

Suicidal empathy was literally the sin of Judas.

Think of what that money could have done for the poor, says the man who turns Christ over to the Roman authorities, and later hung himself in despair.

He makes the statement when Lazarus's sister Mary annoints the feet of Jesus with a costly perfume.

The wisdom in making a misapplied, deceitful and narcissistic empathic altruism the sin of the betrayer of Christ Himself is breathtaking.

It's another example (along with bottomless depths of the story of Cain and Abel and the brazen serpent who is also Jesus) of the truly incomprehensible literary genius of the Biblical canon.

A gentle reminder that there is in fact not really such a thing as “the seal of the confessional” in English law. And so the question for the Church of England at the moment is not whether we abolish, but whether we introduce it. The Ecclesiastical Law Soc has done superb research into the issue. ⚓️✝️

Well done +Nick Chamberlain (Bishop of Grantham) for raising the point that the UK is becoming increasingly hostile to LGBTQ people and that we are backsliding badly. We need to move beyond polarisation, stop hiding behind process, and show compassion and solidarity. #GeneralSynod

10/ And one more thing. I find it somewhat ironic that some of the same people who told us heat pumps don't work now demand we all install heat pumps in the form of air conditioning. Because that is what an air conditioner is: a heat pump running in one direction.

I am fine with the church not "being younger". Old people are valuable. Many come to faith having lived a life. And financially, if your goal in "being younger" is financial stability, the young aren't the cash-cow they once were, as working young no longer have the cash-to-give they once did. ⚓️✝️
