A Tibetan activist lit himself on fire and outside of the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday to protest China’s control over his homeland, declaring in a video before his self-immolation that Beijing’s policies were “destroying the Tibetan people.” He later died.

This represents the first account of the Toshakhana or Treasure House, a colonial institution appropriated from earlier Indian and Persian practice. I argue that instead of solidifying regard it produced indifference to the gift & giver. A dream come true to publish in @pastpresentsoc.bsky.social

🧵: This new law, in keeping with previous ones lines the HK National Security Law, asserts that the PRC can extraterritorialize its jurisdiction over speech and actions related to its national unity. Essentially it’s stating that it can police how people abroad speak about ethnic policy. /1
