Rivendell as a sanctuary reminds me of The Peach Blossom Spring (Tao Yuanming, 421 CE). It depicts a fisherman who got lost when sailing on a river surrounded by peach trees, and found a hidden ethereal village. The villagers' ancestors had fled the political turmoil and never left. #TolkienTrewsday

From the early days of #Tolkien illustration the innovative, colourful images of Hugo awarding winning fantasy/sci fi elder Tim Kirk shine out like Gondorian beacons. Here's one of my favourites, Frodo, Sam and Gimli peering into the starry depths of Mirrormere (c.1974).

Without the generosity of the artists who grant us permission to publish, Amon Hen would not be as you see it today, full of beautiful imagery. AMON HEN ART CHALLENGE AUGUST 2026 One of the things we love with Tolkien Trewsday is the incredible creativity of the community - and the chance to help share and celebrate outstanding Tolkien-inspired artwork. This August, we’re delighted to once again collaborate with Amon Hen, the bulletin of The Tolkien Society, to present a special series of weekly art prompts. Thanks to the generosity of artists who allow their work to be featured, Amon Hen is filled with stunning imagery - and this challenge is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to that tradition. Artists of all kinds and in all mediums are warmly encouraged to take part, and we’re excited to see what the community creates over the coming weeks! Another pairing between Tolkien character and batik motif! Nienna, the Lady of Pity and Mercy, could wear Udan Liris ("soft rain") for how her tears brought forth the Sun and Moon from the damaged Two Trees, or Sido Asih ("lasting love") because Pity was the foundation of LotR. #TolkienTrewsday

#TolkienTrewsday Week 179: Pity ‘Pity? It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need…’ Bilbo no longer saw Gollum as a monster, but rather a sad little creature who was all alone. And so, feeling pity for him, Bilbo has mercy on Gollum and spares his life.
