I think one of the most important early things to be told before your first conference is that what the mean ones in the audience for your paper say is generally more about them than it is about you. It's very hard to externalise it though.

As a Phd student, I used to get so nervous about presenting because of how vicious people are that I used to need medication to calm down. We are so incredibly unnecessarily mean.
