While the Fields Medal celebrates the under-40s, the mathematician Joan Birman has, at the age of 99, solved a major open problem in representations of the Braid groups, a topic she has worked on for more than 60 years.

Saw Pavement at Mosswood Meltdown last Fri, and the thing that really stays with me is their intro from John Waters: "Ah, the 90's, I was already old. You weren't, but now you are.... Oh, youth. Guess what? You'll never get it back. But here's the next best thing. Pavement!"
