Of all the future Ai stuff I can imagine as extremely uncanny, having a machine that can just keep producing really funny text-based humor would be one of the uncanniest. Actual funny jokes are extremely rare and few people can create them.

I was listening to the original Muppet Movie soundtrack today as my daughter made a puppet in my office. Had an offhand thought about the post-Henson Muppets and why they often feel like they're missing something? I think a big part of it is the first movie is a kind of 70s style Variety Show?
Enjoying the best adaptation of The Odyssey, and by that I mean all the comics that @smbccomics.bsky.social made about it.
@zachweinersmith.bsky.social On vacation, 5 and 8 year olds were being obnoxious as we were losing the car, so 10 year old, unprompted, pulled out Bea Wolf and started reading it aloud, bellowing it until his brothers sat down and listened. I think I now understand the storytelling impulse better.
I have unironically gotten a "You are an expert" prompt from my boss after less than 6 months at an entry level engineering position.

Are there informal rules in film and TV for what accent a ghost can have? My impression is outside of comedy they have to have a standard accent, a country accent, or an old-fashioned accent of some kind. But you couldn’t have for example a modern New Yorker or Boston accent.
There's a lot in this thread & its multiple & various reply/quote offshoots that i disagree with, & am exhausted by, but i want to focus on 1 that i keep trying to press on: Let's stipulate LLMs *Can* do grad- & even expert-level math & we should prep for a revolution in the field… So what then?…
There's lots of stuff LLMs can't do, but if you want to disbelieve all the recent math, you have to believe a bunch of Fields Medalists with long track records are just straightforwardly lying about the thing they care most about. Here's a recent blog by Gowers: gowers.wordpress.com/2026/05/08/a...
What we’re reading: Bea Wolf - Zach Weinersmith, Boulet Epic adventures and battles, very cute @smbccomics.bsky.social @bouletcorp.bsky.social #books #kidlit #graphicnovels #beowulf
Watching my 12 year old choosing to read Bea Wolf without prompting today was really nice. Most encouraging me she told me favorite parts instead of "it's good, Dad."

Verily and amen. Also, think tanks should consider hiring cartoonists.
I think the right move, which I don't see enough of, is developing a synthetic philosophy of how to co-exist with all this, as humans have had to try do in past industrial revolutions. If I could convince a think tank to hire a cartoonist, I'd be doing it tomorrow instead of between projects.
Interestingly the best arguments (to me anyway) are around gambling legalization.
What's the argument against legalizing victimless crimes? I was reading Alvin Roth's book and (tw) he says in natural experiments the rate of sexual assault declines a LOT when sex work gets legalized. Seems the argument for drug legalization is pretty strong too? Would love to hear disagreement.

From Terry Tao’s ICM lecture. While there are additional arrows later that aren’t shown here, verification informs exposition. If an AI proof is autoformalized before it is understood and reworked by a human, the result will be more conceptually brittle even if evidently correct. /1
