I enjoyed yesterday's Quaker Studies conference on Quakers and the Law. Fascinating presentations covered questions including what it's like to be a Quaker judge, how outer right internet discourse about Quakers focusses on prisons, and what Quakers might say about AI use in the legal world.

Our conference venue, the Central Quaker Meeting House in Bristol. It's a single story brick building with a sign board outside, some parking and bike racks, and a few steps or a slope up to a red door which is half open.

Michael Foran's book is of high quality. I would urge anyone who is interested in the law in this area to read the book and judge for themselves.

Reminder that students pushed back on anti-trans lectures and got them cancelled. Not administrators, not lawyers, students. I have seen various bizarre claims today on this site about Michael Foran: (a) he doesn’t have a law degree; (b) he incites violence against trans people; (c) he has no friends. All of these claims are false.

Text reads: The EHRC has been gaslighting us for a year, insisting publicly and repeatedly that their legal analysis - and their draft code of practice - were unimpeachable. Now it's clear that they got the law wrong, and they've been told to fix the guidance they tried to force through last year. It shouldn't have taken this long for the EHRC to do its job. After the judgment in our legal challenge against the EHRC's interim guidance, we wrote to the equalities minister, Bridget Phillipson, urging her to reject the draft code. Now, after further legal analysis "including in the light of the recent court rulings", they're going to "make adjustments". The government intends to lay the updated guidance before parliament for approval in May. For Jess O'Thomson, Good Law Project's trans rights lead, the minister's language and framing were "predictably terrible" from this government, but can't subtract from "a substantial win for the trans community" "We are glad the minister has demanded these changes - only time will tell if the revised draft properly explains how organisations can remain trans inclusive, and protects the rights of all. But whatever the guidance contains, Good Law Project will continue our work to ensure the human rights of trans people are defended."

Religious pacifists tend to assume that "just war" theory means something like, "war, in general, is justified". Not so. Just war theory sets a high bar before warfare can be morally legitimate.

BREAKING: The U.S. bishops’ Committee on Doctrine just issued a formal statement defending Pope Leo XIV's teaching authority on just war doctrine — less than twelve hours after JD Vance told a Turning Point USA crowd the pope should “be careful” talking theology. This is a serious escalation.
