In southern France and Swifts are everywhere! All the towns have epic numbers and a single building this morning must have had 20+ pairs, they seem to like these ridged tiles when they aren’t filled in, something to recreate in UK rather than a token Swift brick here and there?

That was quick! Tophill's a sporadic breeding site ~48km from Spurn (2nd biggest dot on map below). Good example of Marsh Tits dispersing from isolated territories in fragmented habitat getting 'lost in the landscape', with no habitat or mates nearby. They keep looking until they run out of options☠️

Can't wait to hear origins of the ringed Marsh Tit at Spurn. In the book I included a section & figure on dispersing Marsh Tit juvs reaching Spurn in summer, how they must cross at least 40 km of hostile open farmland to get there. But sadly it's the end of the road for them. #ornithology #ukbirding

A very unusual nest! A pair of Wood Warblers Phylloscopus sibilatrix feeding young Wrens Troglodytes troglodytes. I presume the warblers' nest was predated and they found this similar looking nest nearby and began to feed the young even though the adult Wrens were too! Dartmoor, Devon this morning.

Just over 2 years ago I chopped 2 gaps in our new build garden and never thought I’d actually get a Hedgehog come in… they’ve only gone and nested in it! 2 babies wandering round the wildflower patch this evening! 🦔🦔🦔

A nice surprise to find Yellow-browed Warblers (Phylloscopus inornatus) breeding in a relatively small larch forest at ~2,000m elevation in E Kazakhstan, in the same habitat as Hume’s Warbler. As far as we know, the species was not previously known to breed in Kazakhstan. @pdvsky.bsky.social

At Newton this evening when I heard a Phalarope calling, I looked up but could only see a large flock of Starlings. Then I realised, this Red-necked Phalarope was in amongst them ! It dropped towards the scrapes but I couldn't relocate it unfortunately. #NEbirding #Lowcarbonbirding #PatchGold

And the star of the show: the Richard’s Pipit (Anthus richardi). We searched for the species along the Russian border, near where the birds that winter in Europe are breeding. Let’s see whether they all go east or west.

Nice to receive this record of a colour-ringed Oystercatcher seen in the Foggathorpe area by @duncbye.bsky.social this week – originally ringed in August 2009 as a first-year in Hampshire - next seen near Barnsley (April 2012) and Goole (April 2014) - likely to be breeding in the area.

Some shots taken last week of drake White-winged Scoter in Kirkcaldy (Fife). At least 2 have been present, along with singles of Black and Surf Scoter. This bird has attached itself to the local Eiders, offering some incredible views at times.

Nice to walk out from home today while I had a bit of free time. The two Bonaparte's Gulls were showing really well at Lynch Cove. The 3cy bird was a new plumage for me. Very instructive in flight too.
