NEW: Virginia just passed a law to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, giving it 222 of 270 electoral votes needed to activate. This map and spreadsheet show which states could join to activate it by 2028 depending on the outcome of the 2026 elections docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
the strait of hormuz is in a quantum superposition of open and closed that only collapses when you try to take a tanker through yourself and see if you get shot at
Trump started a pointless and illegal war with Iran, he lost it almost immediately, he crushed America's economy and America's partners while making Iran and our rivals much stronger. He did it for no reason he can articulate. In any decent nation, he'd be forced to resign immediately.
The “prosecute the former regime at every level” candidate has my vote in 2028.
Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.
Autocrats typically purge the so-called “power ministries” (law enforcement, investigations, defense) of anyone who might be loyal to the law over the leader and replace them with loyalists who turn these agencies into personal weapons and shields for the regime. We’re watching it happen.
"The Trump administration is firing and pushing out employees across the Justice Department and FBI, often with no explanation or warning, creating rampant speculation and fear within the workforce over who might be terminated next..." {gift link} wapo.st/3InfKMA
Every political reporter in the country understood that if Republicans won a trifecta, the upshot would be what happened today: huge cuts to healthcare to pay for tax cuts for the rich. Yet they consistently reported the biggest issue at play in the election as "high prices." Why?
I have both *thoughts* and *feelings* about Trump attacking Harvard. And I want to share them with you.
The folks who love calling everything “communist” are apparently pretty cool with the Dear Leader trying to dictate prices.
The argument is simultaneously that US companies will “eat the tariffs” through lower profit margins, and that the stock market will boom because … earnings growth?
One of the crazymaking features of the current political moment is that MAGA keeps trying to retcon ideas that were just an uncontroversial part of our shared American values as of a couple years ago into some wacky left-wing position.
It's 2015. President Barack Obama has accepted a "sky palace" jumbo jet from the Qatari government, which he'll own after he leaves office. "Everybody relax," he says in an interview with the New York Times. Everyone does. The networks then televise the military parade in his honor on his birthday.

this is such good news. i think it is also an opportunity for democrats to state forthrightly that when they win power again everyone responsible for this crime will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law and will face the american people to answer for their lawlessness
I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse
I've been clear: if President Bukele doesn't want to meet here in D.C., then I intend to go to El Salvador this week to check on Kilmar Abrego Garcia's condition and discuss his release. Kilmar was illegally ABDUCTED and deported by the Trump Admin. He must be brought home NOW.
If Bukele doesn't want to meet in D.C., I'll go to El Salvador to check on Kilmar Abrego Garcia

No one should be above the law, most especially the President. Ignoring a Supreme Court ruling to facilitate Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return isn't just cruel; it's unconstitutional. They're saying the quiet part aloud — if they get away with it now, they'll do it to anyone.
Trump to Bukele: "Home-growns are next. The home-growns. You gotta build about five more places. It's not big enough."
I am lamentably certain that 90% of the reporting on this is going to say something like “some experts disputed the methodology used to calculate foreign tariffs” rather than “Trump made up a bunch of nonsense numbers to justify his policy, and they’re all 10x-20x higher than the real numbers.”
They love this “run the government like a business” canard coz it conjures images of efficiency and accountability. The reality is, it’s about increasing profits for the few over the wellbeing of the many. If the government operated the way a business does, the citizenry should rightfully revolt.
This guy is in one of the worst prisons in the world with no way out and may spend the rest of his life there because, it appears, he has an autism awareness tattoo in honor of his little brother. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
So the Trump administration’s argument is that this dude, not a court, should have the final say on who ends up in an El Salvadoran prison. Does that make you feel safer in America?
Presented with evidence that innocent people who are not members of any gang were wrongly deported to a slave prison in El Salvador, Homan flatly insists that all of them were in fact gang members (but he's unwilling to detail any evidence showing it)
I have no patience for this temporizing. People are being summarily shipped off into slavery in central america under the imprimatur of the US government right now. Canada—Canada!—is putting itself on a war footing. We’ve been off the map and in uncharted territory for the last 250 miles.
Schumer: "If he defies the Supreme Court, then we are in uncharted territory ... our entire democracy is at risk. I believe that if Donald Trump should defy the courts, the public will rise up. Democrats will fight it in every single way ... autocrats only succeed if the public lets them."
