This is a weird form of gaslighting MAGA is very fond of: They act like the preservation of core American traditions and norms that have been around for centuries is actually some wacky novelty. I guess because they want to pose as “conservatives” rather than the radicals they are.

Senator Banks calls the Supreme Court’s decision not to change the law on birthright citizenship “the worst Supreme Court decision of my lifetime.” Keep in mind that he was born and lived his entire life under the legal interpretation of the 14th Amendment the Court kept in place.

And we're off, with MOVIE NO. 39 in our chronological tour through the American movies of the 1980s....and we're in May of 1980, and as our thoughts turn lightly to the summer, that means it's time to investigate the bloody waters of Camp Crystal Lake...that's right, it's FRIDAY THE 13TH!

All right, here goes: in preparation for a book I'm writing, I'm going to try something very ambitious/stupid. I am going to attempt to watch every single American movie produced in the 1980s. In chronological order of release. And to talk about them here in the process.

This is ridiculously scary. Yes, we are currently talking about ballrooms and reflecting pools and inflation and Iran and Venezuela and Epstein and crypto grift and the moral rot of the GOP. But all that is going to be forgotten soon. Shit is about to get real, as they say.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Uefa says they have reason to believe that Trump, Joshua Kushner and Infantino hatched a corrupt scheme involving the privatization of Fifa, and they are suing for damages and the ouster of Infantino. They have issued an anti-spoliation letter today demanding preservation of documents..

Moreno finally speaks: “As he has admitted privately, Max Miller needs serious psychological help. He is a danger to my daughter & I hold my breath every minute he has custody of my granddaughter. If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them.”

senator bernie moreno finally makes a statement about the allegations of abuse by rep. max miller against his daughter and granddaughter after miller went live on X this morning to deny everything.

This is my question: What, exactly, was SO bad about the Before, that makes this preferable to it? Was it literally just the fact that a Black man was elected president?? I mean, for literally ANYONE except the .01% making billions, how was this the better option???

The rest of your natural life—and then some. That's how long we'll be cleaning up the mess of Trump and MAGAism. The nation as it was before is lost. It won't return. What we seek to save now isn't what used to be. It'll be something else altogether. It'll be what we make it.

As I said repeatedly during Trump 1.0, Trump sees the U.S. Treasury as his personal piggy bank. But back then, he couldn’t find a way to siphon it to himself. This time around, he has: shakedowns, crypto, and the slush fund. With the added bonus of paying off his own shadow army.

Frum: The 20% who lived in the most pro-Trump places suffered 70,000 more COVID deaths than the 20% in the most pro-Biden places. Red America obeyed those who told them not to mask, not to vaccinate. They died for it. No, Fauci is not the villain here. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Anthony Fauci Is Not the Villain in This Story

The doctor was thrust into his pandemic-leadership role because of Trump’s deadly dereliction of duty.

It's precisely *because* of the enormous risks of such outcomes that the Constitution precludes the President from unilaterally taking the U.S. into such a war in the first place. Your daily reminder: Even the Trump Administration itself hasn't defended its legality. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/01/w...

In Iran, the U.S. Appears Headed for a Strategic Defeat, Allies Fear

With none of President Trump’s aims accomplished and the Strait of Hormuz closed, U.S. allies see dysfunction and vulnerability from the war.

We really should have gone to greater lengths to be loudly disgusted by anyone who acted like getting a shot or wearing a mask to prevent the spread of a pandemic virus was worse than being conscripted into the First World War
