There's such wit to the humor in the Warner Bros cartoons. Protagonists who are smart, sophisticated, brought down by their hubris or through the chaos of the uncaring world. They're existential. Disney cartoons are idiots slipping on banana peels done in the most elegant animation you've ever seen.

Checked this out from the library on a whim yesterday; a 600 page biography on Stanley Kubrick. It came out a couple years ago, never heard anyone discuss this book before.
I periodically keep an eye on these on eBay, and occasionally, some get posted that aren't outrageously priced. This year I've acquired 5 of the Walt Disney Treasures DVDs, totaling some 175 cartoons spanning 1928-1941. The first decade of Mickey, the first few years of Donald, the best Symphonies.

I haven't liked a Refn film in quite a long time, but I loved HER PRIVATE HELL, and I tried to figure out why. The film is a fantasy of busted binaries, and characters whose sexuality, gender identity, kinks, and persona are in a state of symbolic impermanence. www.patreon.com/willowcately...

The "canonical" debut of Bugs Bunny was released on this day in 1940, the Tex Avery short A Wild Hare. There are a couple sorta-Bugs-Bunny cartoons before this one, but it's fair to view this as his first. Happy 86th birthday, Bugs.
