This image is one of his plein air paintings (French for “open air”) it is the term for painting outdoors, directly from the subject, rather than in a studio from photos or memory. He spent a tremendous amount of time in the desert.

The photo shows his easel standing alone in the desert. There is no sign of him in the frame, just the evidence that he was there. The canvas is caught mid-sky, clouds still wet and half-formed, that pale blue-green light of a storm passing or gathering. The desert floor stretches out flat and pale around it, scrub brush and distant hills, that hazy stillness of a place with almost no one in it.

And then his palette, propped against the easel leg, worn wood streaked with every color he mixed that day, warm oranges and yellows next to cool blues and greens, the thumb-hole worn smooth from use. A tube of white paint dropped in the sand nearby, like he’d just set it down.

It’s such an intimate photo, not a photo of a painting, but a photo of the act of painting. The setup, the solitude, the in-between moment before the work was finished. He went out into all that emptiness by himself to chase a sky. There’s something almost meditative about it, just him, the light, and the color on that palette.

It shows exactly how he saw the world, patient, and dedicated to sit with a half-formed sky until he got it right.

This piece was recreated into a mural he had done. A collision of eras and worlds, a doe-headed woman standing beside a cobalt horse, a solemn child in old velvet, all of it stitched together out of fragments like a dream that refuses to resolve into one time or place. It feels inevitable, like it always belonged together. A dream painted by a dreamer.

A commissioned piece. Tender and haunting at once, she drifts rather than sinks, weightless, her dress trailing like something between fabric and light. It echoes the old story of Ophelia, but he’s made it entirely his own, less tragedy, more surrender. There’s a stillness in her face that isn’t fear. It’s closer to peace. He gave her dignity in that moment, which is its own kind of grace.

My brother-in-law died last night on land overlooking a valley where he painted each summer, sometimes painting murals to pay bills. His work is attached. My heart aches not for my loss, but for my husband, who adored him leaning on their friendship, love and spats as my husband fights cancer.

My brother-in-la, a devoted artist committed to classic technique, he spent much of his career painting en plein air in the desert, a discipline that shaped the eye behind these murals: the way light falls, the way weathered color holds against brick and open sky.

That same devotion is visible here. The three murals work together as a single, illusionary tear through time, painted directly onto the building’s corner. The wall itself appears to rip open, jagged edges of exposed brick and steel framing the openings as if the building’s ordinary present has been peeled back to reveal what lies beneath it.

Through the largest breach, a solitary traveler steps forward, weathered hat pulled low, a bindle slung over his shoulder, a figure caught mid-journey, walking out of the past and into the world outside the wall. Just beneath him hangs the piece he signed his name to: Beyond Eden. A woman in flowing white stands beside a dark horse, a golden, storm-lit field behind her, the whole scene held in an ornate gilded frame that seems to rest impossibly on the brick, a painting within the painting, vivid and alive against the muted world around it.

Around the building’s corner, a second tear opens onto a sepia-toned memory: children seated together on old stone steps beneath an archway, a small black cat curled beside them, rendered like a photograph pulled from another century. And standing alone at the building’s edge, a young girl in a pale dress turns to look back at the viewer, one hand resting against the brick as though she’s just stepped out of that same vanished world, the last figure keeping watch over the ones who came before.

Together, the three scenes read as an invitation: brick giving way to memory, ordinary walls giving way to ancestors, the same quiet reverence for light and place that marked his desert work, now fixed permanently on a city wall.
