Unsealed court documents from Bartz v. Anthropic reveal Datamation was contracted to cut apart books with a hydraulic press in order to scan and digitize them before Anthropic fed the data to AI models. Datamation’s name has been left out of this story by outlets like the Washington Post, writing only that Anthropic hired “a vendor” to destructively scan the books. I have yet to find a major outlet that directly links to court documents detailing Project Panama — Anthropic’s plan to “destructively scan all the books in the world.”Documents linked in Substack in bio!View all 2,297 comments
