Attended a Legend on the Bench unveiling in Basingstoke today, in memory of Joe Powell. Truly moving and inspiring, and it’s the 137th such suicide prevention bench the charity has installed. Honestly the work Micky Hazard and his sister Michelle have done and continue to do is awe inspiring.

HNK Trogir - former loan club of Igor Tudor. What a setting to play football!
This week we landed in Split, got in a taxi, and within seconds the driver and I were talking about Niko Kranjcar. So naturally I wrote about Spurs and Croatia from the beach... stillthelane.co.uk/blog/taxi-fr...
The taxi from Split airport
A driver asked if we had watched the World Cup, and four minutes later we were talking about Niko Kranjcar. A country of four million has given us more good afternoons than it had any obligation to.

Isn’t it nuts, this whole new accepted layer of news where transfers basically get unofficially announced by Romano or Ornstein first
I wish it was an atmospheric ghostly Brian Moore commentating right now and not that matter-gentleman
I'm so happy for Harry Kane, but while watching the whole country celebrating him, somewhere in me is a man six rows out of position in the rain at White Hart Lane, who knows exactly how petty this is and cannot help it, muttering that they are all very welcome, and that he was ours first.
I still don't like sharing him
Harry Kane is breaking World Cup records in America and everyone suddenly wants to claim him. I am delighted for him, and quietly, childishly territorial. He was ours first.

Steve Perryman went to Belfast to watch Ilie Dumitrescu before USA '94, didn't fancy what he saw, then spotted Gheorghe Popescu walking through the reception. Ossie Ardiles told him to put the phone down and go and talk to him. The rest is history. #COYS #THFC
Put the phone down
Steve Perryman went to a wet night in Belfast to watch one Romanian and came home having found a better one. With the World Cup back in America, one of the best transfer stories I know.

Agbonlahor is raging, Simon Jordan says we don't know what we're doing, and half of Newcastle thinks it's a fix.
We paid for this summer twenty years ago
Agbonlahor is raging, Simon Jordan says we don't know what we're doing, and half of Newcastle thinks it's a fix. A word about where little old Tottenham got the money.

They tell me I’m uncultured, but I’ll always recognise a bit of Beethoven.
Safe travels, João. The door should never be anything but open.
You're not supposed to fall in love with a loan player
Palhinha is going back to Bayern. The ambitious new Spurs we asked for turns out to have no room for the players you grow to love.

Bill Nicholson got a blue plaque in Scarborough this week. But the letter that tells you what he was actually like is framed on @steveperryman.bsky.social's wall - typed to a fifteen-year-old's dad, before agents existed.
The plaque in Scarborough, and the letter in a hallway in Wiltshire
Bill Nicholson's birthplace got a blue plaque this week. The Nicholson memorial that says the most about him is hanging somewhere else entirely.

We don't suffer because transfers take a long time. We suffer because we find out about them too early...
We found out too early, and now we have to suffer the wait
We don't suffer because transfers take a long time. We suffer because we find out about them too early. A thought about what the modern game has done to supporting a club.

A bit late re-sharing this Father's Day special from the earlier podcast days, remembering my father Ron and my football father, Bill Nicholson, and the values they instilled in me in my younger years. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hqh-...

Van Hecke for £52m, and the strange feeling of us doing this properly
Jan Paul van Hecke is a Spurs player. De Zerbi's man, signed early and cleanly for a fair price. The unfamiliar bit is how little drama there was.

I was so focused on own team’s situation that the goons’ title mercifully passed me by. Tonight I’m fully invested! ALLEZ PSG 🇫🇷 🇫🇷 🇫🇷
Four days on and I’m still walking around infatuated with Palhinha, proving nothing beats the high of a solid but unspectacular midfielder achieving legendary status. Total flashback to being 17 and worshipping Allan Nielsen after the 99 League Cup final. I’m 44 now. Clearly, I have a type.
A year’s difference. Europa final v Premier league safety game. He’s growing up quick and experiencing everything Spurs along the way.
