Here for #OddsAgainstTomorrow, a film I love. The title is as bleak as noir gets: suggestive of a country so mired in a ’50s mindset, it has little hope of moving forward. But it also feels like a film very much prepared to kick, scream and protest its way into the ’60s. #TCMParty #SummerOfDarkness

This is a very good examination of what's happening in the production industry. I have an animator friend who– despite working on numerous Oscar-winning films– has been out of work for two years until recently getting a 3 month "rush job" gig with Disney. Then he'll go back to working in retail.

When trying a new pen you doodle and sign your name by reflex. As Bill tests the pen, you can see the idea dawn to test Helen. Even the sales clerk notices the shift. Helen steps into the trap and freezes, as usual. Bill lets it go, also as usual, but he knows. #NoManofHerOwn #TheNoirCollective

Leisen loved to use character actress Esther Dale. Her first Leisen film was Easy Living, in which she played Edward Arnold’s deadpan secretary. Leisen had her study the mannerisms of his own longtime secretary Eleanor Broder – and that soon became Dale’s ongoing onscreen persona. #TheNoirCollective

Paramount signed John Lund in ‘45, after a talent scout saw him on Broadway, but had no idea what to do with him. Leisen put him into To Each His Own – in a dual role, as father and son, although the studio objected – and his star was instantly (if briefly) in the ascendant. #TheNoirCollective (1/2)

Phyllis Thaxter wanted a stunt double in the hamster wheel for her, but Stanwyck always insisted on doing her own stunts, so Thaxter took the plunge too. Leisen centers Thaxter's genuinely terrified face in the foreground while Stanwyck tumbles around behind her. #NoManofHerOwn #TheNoirCollective

Years ago, after devouring Leisen’s screwballs, I did a deep dive into the rest of his films, and first up was #NoManOfHerOwn. I saw Phyllis Thaxter and thought, “She’s great. I wonder if she did any more big movies.” 😅 Little did I know she’d become one of my favorite noir stars. #TheNoirCollective

The flashback is ushered in by a zoom in on Helen's eyes, replacing the pretty, light home around her with darkness. When we see her again, she's listless, sweating in a dingy phone booth. As Woolrich put it, she's a used doll in a box with the lid missing. #NoManofHerOwn #TheNoirCollective

Soul-stirring with at least one scene that is almost too devastating to watch. Plus Sterling Holloway singing "A Perfect Day." A practically perfect movie.

1. REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940) Moving but not mawkish, insightful but not insistent. I know no holiday film as nurturing; it’s been a Xmas tradition in our home for 20 years. (Barbara Stanwyck, as a lady thief, delivers my personal credo: “I told you my mind works differently.”) #TheNoirCollective

The camera pans slowly from street to house as Stanwyck's hushed voiceover establishes a world of happy homes in sun-dappled, tree-lined streets then excludes herself from it. The scores shifts to a minor key at "but not for us," amplifying the sense of foreboding. #NoManofHerOwn #TheNoirCollective

MITCHELL LEISEN has long been one of my top-three Classic Hollywood directors. As one of Paramount’s premier directors from 1933-51, he was equally adept at shaping a script, shooting a scene and sculpting a performance. The stars who worked with Leisen spoke of him glowingly. ⬇️ #TheNoirCollective
