My brother Matthew is based in Cambodia, but visiting the UK to celebrate his 82nd birthday this Monday. Here we are on Cromer Beach, I think, circa 1951.

From Alan Bennett's recent diary collection, Enough Said: "A call from Radio 4 from my views on assisted dying. Answer - too near to the unassisted type to be keen on it."

Trying to identify a piece of instrumental light music I remember BBC Dance orchestras playing on the Light Programme's Music While You Work show in the early-mid 1950s. I stil remember the melody - plonked out here on one finger piano. Anyone else out there old enough to be able to help?

My first band met when we lived on Teesside - our ambition was to play Boro Town Hall. Playing Stockton 50 yrs later feels close to home. Expect songs from Rock against Racism, encounters with Eddy and Elton, new tunes, old jokes & outstanding guitar from Adam Phillips. See tomrobinson.com/gigs

It's the 82nd anniversary of the D-day landings in 1944. If people then had looked back 82 years for something to celebrate, it would have taken them to 1862. The year of Victor Hugo's Les Mis, the invention of the Gatling Gun, and escalating carnage in The American Civil War. #enoughalready

A good time to revist this oldie from W1A... BBC Director of Better - job introduction. The Establishment of a Director of Better represents a turning point to the BBC by placing the idea of betterness at its core going forward and beyond.
