Reading @tonywhite.bsky.social fantastic Phantom of the Feast and this just jumped out at me and gave me a chill. I was at that match and had to sit on the perimeter cos of the crush. I’ve never seen it mentioned before. When Hillsborough happened a few years later I wasn’t entirely surprised

I always turn to @bigissue.com’s distinctive books coverage! So I was thrilled to write one of the magazine’s new “Recommended Reads” columns for this week’s magazine, to celebrate publication of Phantom at the Feast. To find out my recommends, do please buy a magazine from your local vendor!🫡🙏✊

At the Spurs match yes. I’ve never seen anyone mention the crush that day. I began to wonder if I’d imagined it. It was very frightening - they made us sit round the edge of the pitch - a surreal experience

Thanks again to Dan for @ing me in this post about Phantom last night – sharing because OMG authors, readers, isn't this what it's all about?! 🫡🙏✊

Back from the shops. - I've not read Guy's stories before. - I loved Tony's 'Fountain in the Forest'. This is the follow-up. Expect more surreal noir/political/musical shenanigans. - Calvino: Calvino. - The McCracken is my own copy so I can scrawl 'Yes!' all over the pages.

Four books laid on a table:
A Day Like Any Other by Guy Ware (Salt Modern Stories) with a vaguely abstracted painting of a man sitting in an armchair: muted tones, bare feet
Into the War by Italo Calvino (Penguin Modern Classic) - charity shop sticker tells us it cost £1
A Long Game: How to Write Fiction by Elizabeth McCracken - green hardback with an illustration of a very short pencil with eraser
Phantom at the Feast by Tony White - noirish photo of a city-outskirts corner with someone walking across an empty street and an illuminated mincab sign.

ICYM Phantom at the Feast, follow-up to The Fountain in the Forest, is out now from No Exit Press. See link in bio for reviews, interviews, articles, and more… Available in paperback original, ebook (& audiobook @wfhowes.bsky.social) from all your favourite bookshops. I really hope you enjoy it!🫡🙏✊
