Ok, next level. Simulating a landslide hitting a proglacial lake, producing a #GLOF. Note that the flood is (not yet) able to erode but just spills through two channels. In reality, the displacement wave would probably incise and widen the outflow channels, triggering a more severe flood downstream.

Just out in Science Advances with @topotoolbox.bsky.social: Submarine canyons preferentially form where the seafloor is steepest—not where rivers bring much sediment. Our global study reveals what controls canyon distribution and the world’s oceans. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Seafloor slopes control submarine canyon distribution: A global analysis
Submarine canyon distribution is driven by slope inclination, linking tectonic and thermal forces to canyon formation.

Austria without mountain glaciers. We can do better! ❄️ #scicomm #climate #science 🧪 🌎 🔬 ⚒️ #geosky #ClimateHealth #ClimateAction tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/...
Recent observations and glacier modeling point towards near-complete glacier loss in western Austria (Ötztal and Stubai mountain range) if 1.5 °C is not met
Abstract. Most glaciers in Austria are expected to disappear in the coming decades. The general trend to deglaciation is apparent from observations of past glacier change as well as projections of fut...
