It's concerning that the NYPD is writing hundreds fewer tickets per week than they did last year for illegal driver behavior that slows bus riders and endangers pedestrians and bike riders. NYPD should be a partner in, not an obstacle to, safe streets and fast buses.

Across the more than 6,300 miles of NYC's streets, the NYPD’s nearly 34,000 officers ticketed only 10 drivers for blocking bus lanes, 12 drivers for parking in a bus stop and 10 drivers for parking in a bike lane last week.

With Friday's consumer alert issued by Attorney General Letitia James, New York is beginning to turn the tide on these companies' deceptive practices. For too long, they've been getting away with selling high-speed devices that aren't street-legal.

New Yorkers deserve to know whether they’re buying something safe and legal, or dangerous and illegal. It’s unconscionable that companies have been falsely marketing illegal high-speed devices as street-legal and selling them to unwitting New Yorkers.

Nearly two decades ago, we fought to bring bike share to New York City. It was thanks to our advocacy that Citi Bike launched in 2013. Since that time, more than 300 million Citi Bike rides have been taken.

New this morning: Thanks to Attorney General Letitia James issuing a consumer alert, companies will no longer be able to deceptively market their illegal high-speed devices as "legal." These companies have been preying on New Yorkers, and lives have been lost because of it.

This morning, a driver hit and killed a 17-year-old boy riding an illegal high-speed device on Centre Street in Lower Manhattan. This device is illegal on New York City Streets, but still available for purchase online.
