It's official. Large parts of the Trent catchment are in drought. Wildlife is feeling the heat. To help, we've put together a few simple things you can do right now. We're well aware that these are short-term actions, and we must not lose sight of the bigger picture:

Our balsam-bashing volunteers are at it again. This time, clearing a woodland near the River Mease from Himalayan balsam. Thanks to their incredible effort, native flora can return to the woodland, and the spread of the invasive, non-native plant reduces further.

It's a throwback nobody wants. On 15th July 2025, the Midlands moved into drought. While drought may still be some way off in 2026, it is a possibility we cannot ignore.

A huge thank you goes to the Birmingham team at Hogan Lovells for braving the heat and supporting nature recovery on the River Cole. Volunteers removed huge swathes of Himalayan balsam, a fast-spreading invasive non-native species that suffocates native plants and causes riverbanks to erode.

How did the Trent get its name? It's a question Trent Rivers Trust and @anglingtrust.bsky.social are asking in the name of conservation. One theory is that the Trent got its name from the thirty species that once swam in its waters.

We're continuing our series: The Long View. On the left, we rewiggled a straightened watercourse. This slows the flow of water coming from the surrounding hills. On the right, we're revisiting over a year later to see the watercourse embedded into the landscape - like it should.

Incredible news from Derbyshire: an Atlantic salmon has been found in the Bottle Brook for the first time on record! The juvenile fish was found by @trentriverstrust.bsky.social during a survey 🐟 The UK’s Atlantic salmon have been declining for decades, and were declared endangered in 2023.
