Keen on discoveries in bacterial cell biology and bacteriophages, working to impact AMR. Fan of the ocean. Opinions my own.

ASM has submitted formal comments urging the White House Office of Management and Budget to withdraw a proposed rule that would weaken the peer review process, limit scientific collaboration and networking and create new barriers to conducting and disseminating research: asm.org/articles/pol...

Despite a long history of world-leading discoveries, Australia's science system is going backwards – at the very moment the rest of the world is moving forward, fast. That's why we've launched BACK AUSTRALIA'S ABILITY, a call to every Australian to do exactly that.

Like it or lump it, the College of Experts is probably set to remain a staple of ARC's system for some time yet. Most who serve on it report it's worth their time & effort, both as a service to the research community & for their proposal-writing abilities. So, maybe consider nominating for it?

#DECRA applicants, the rejoinder period begins on Monday (25 May). You'll get reports from "detailed assessors" – people in your general field, but not necessarily experts on your specific research. Reports will appear in your RMS portal, normally around 11am Canberra time (but it varies).

This dissolves the core-accessory distinction. Core genes are ones whose beneficial environment is always present. Accessory genes are ones whose beneficial environment is intermittent. Same dynamics, different p values. A continuum, no category boundary.

A very honest assessment of the 2-step EOI-style application procedure that has run for the past three rounds of ARC-DPs. It has failed to deliver on its stated aims, and the ARC has recognized why this was not a good idea for a broad-based scheme such as the ARC-DP scheme.

The ARC has completed an internal review of the 2‑step application process introduced for Discovery Projects in 2023, following three rounds with an Expression of Interest (DP25–DP27). A summary of the review findings and supporting data is now available: www.arc.gov.au/publications...

Really reading the literature has always given scientists in training a huge advantage. But these days, it seems like a superpower. So many people skim/AI summarize papers, but then you miss out on so much! It's like reading a description of a Van Gogh painting vs. staring at it for 2h.
