Thanks #HorrorWritersChat for another great one! I'm reading from three stories for a book sale at a local witchcraft shop for Halloween. One is FOG OVER MONS, my WWI Angels of Mons story. I'm also reading my Lizzie Borden story THE HOUSE NEXT DOOR. Another historical! Third is a fantasy comedy. 📚

#HorrorWritersChat I was in an abusive marriage & some aspects of it ends up in my horror fiction. I'm also bipolar & it made a mess of my life but things have been very good for many years now. Some of my characters come across that way. My quirky "not fitting in" life has made it into my stories.

#HorrorWritersChat I give my characters plenty of backstory, although I don't necessarily include it in the story. My story FOG OVER MONS is set during WWI and it's my eldritch take on the Angels of Mons legend. I did lots of research for that one. I'm reading it at a book reading in October.

#HorrorWritersChat Caster oil plant. The toxin ricin comes from caster beans. I know many medications and poisons come from plants such as foxglove (digitalis), white willow (aspirin), and opium poppies (morphine), but ricin seems especially heinous.

#HorrorWritersChat I tear the stems from my veins. That only makes them dig in deeper. Purple flowers snap open and shut, like floral mouths. I scream. Pain constricts my chest, then I remember - digitalis comes from foxglove. Foxglove's poison affects the heart. I left my heart meds at home.

#WeeknightWriters I injured my left thigh walking in a park with my husband Friday. It HURTS. Saw a doc & I'm picking up a muscle relaxant tomorrow. Haven't felt like writing, obviously. The park we walked at is near Half Moon Beach in Gloucester, MA, where WIDOW'S BAY was filmed. It's cursed! 😱

#HorrorWritersChat I don't usually show monsters. Learned that lesson from the movies JAWS & CURSE OF THE DEMON. It's more effective to leave what the monster looks like to the imagination. The mech. shark in JAWS kept sinking to the bottom of the ocean so Speilberg inferred it. Much more effective.

How do your monsters scare your characters? Is it by their detailed design, or their vague, terrifying aura? How much do you really show? #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat My monsters tend to be reflections of what is most on my character's minds. Sometimes it's a literal reflection. There is a doppelgänger in my story WHEN THE ABYSS STARES BACK. Coming soon on a podcast in October.
