Katie Bergh@katiebergh.bsky.social · 4mo agoThe President's budget would cut WIC’s science-based fruit & vegetable benefit by 62-75%, depending on the participant category. That would leave about 5.4 million low-income parents, toddlers & preschoolers with only $10-$13 each month to buy healthy fruits & vegetables.
Last week, I outlined questions I would be looking to have answered when the President’s budget is released. Now that we have the full proposal, we can now answer them. Hint: It fails to offer affordability solutions to make life more affordable while raising the risk of hasty, harmful cuts. 🧵

It doesn't deliver for rural communities if it leaves behind the 1 in 7 rural households who use SNAP to buy groceries.

Nothing says "laser-focused on affordability issues" like House Republicans proposing a farm bill amendment that would kick a single parent with two kids earning just under $35,000 per year off SNAP for "earning too much."

Preliminary USDA data show about 700,000 fewer low-income people received SNAP benefits in November vs. October, another huge one-month drop. This likely reflects disruption from the shutdown & the Republican megabill (H.R. 1)'s unprecedented SNAP cuts starting to take effect.
Speaking of policy choices: Next week, the House Agriculture Committee will mark up a farm bill that does nothing to address H.R. 1's devastating SNAP cuts as more & more low-income families lose the basic food assistance they need to afford groceries.
Katie Bergh@katiebergh.bsky.social · 5mo agoPeople haven’t been dropping off SNAP because they no longer need help. Economic conditions haven’t improved & groceries haven’t gotten more affordable. They're losing basic food assistance because of policy choices. Allowing this trend to continue is also a policy choice.

You were right @Katie_Bergh! "Lifted" is being used to describe taking food assistance from families, children, and veterans thanks to the $187 billion cut to SNAP and other harmful policy decisions.
