Just trying to figure it out.

What is this about? Use AI to do what exactly? Generate descriptions of the bananas? What stops the other grocery stores from “using AI”? Is the state’s purchasing power not a way to “out perform” private enterprise? That is exactly how most countries purchase prescription drugs.

This will make some folks mad :). The best way for these grocery stores to work is if they use AI to get an edge over private grocery stores. AI is the one way for the state government to out perform private enterprises.

Actually it was conceived as a streamlined way for Republicans to send federal dollars to donors while creating a surveillance state. The name *always* seemed like a Nazi reference—and it likely was. The GWBush admin couldn't even explain why they used it. www.nytimes.com/2002/08/31/u...

But the phrase has failed to make it into common use, and is used almost solely by the bureaucrats charged with defending the country. Tom Ridge, who leads the Office of Homeland Security -- and who perhaps utters the title more often than anyone -- is not even sure how the choice came about.

''Etymology unknown, don't have a clue,'' Mr. Ridge said in an interview this week.

What he is aware of, though, are the complaints that ''homeland security'' sounds somewhat un-American.''People find it a little quaint, a little forced,'' said Deborah Tannen, a linguistics professor at Georgetown University and author of ''You Just Don't Understand'' (William Morrow, 1990).

At worst, Ms. Tannen said, the phrase is associated with sinister historical precedents.

''There is one particular group -- American Jews, and I am Jewish -- for whom it has a menacing association,'' she said.

Nazis favored the word ''heimat,'' or ''homeland,'' and homeland defense forces were known as Heimwehr or Heimatschutz in Austria and Germany from the late 1920's.

DHS was originally conceived in the interest of unity and harmony — and the phrase "homeland security" was originally meant to be reassuring. n.pr/4nOx8KP

Has a more lawerly person like @fleerultra.bsky.social or @ryanlcooper.com looked at HR1299? I see conservatives on social media celebrating it, but Title X, Subsec. B reads to me that any PE firm that owns houses before it is passed can still purchase them as part of any "restructuring"

This guy started a war that's wrecking the world because he was high from the recent kidnapping he did, and thought he could do the same thing and wanted to look smart and strong. Said war can't end because he now has to save face and that's more important than ending it. That's it

Although the Supreme Court technically upheld Section II of VRA, it will effectively dilute the voting power of Black Americans. Trump, Vance, Republican Justices, & Republicans in Congress are undermining multiracial democracy because they fear it. They will not prevail.
