UNGRIPP campaigns on behalf of everyone affected by the Indeterminate Sentence for Public Protection (IPP) in England and Wales.
1, UNGRIPP welcomes the Government’s review of IPP sentences — but after years of promises, we will judge it by what it delivers. IPP was abolished in 2012, yet 2,271 people remained imprisoned under IPP in June 2026. 99% had passed their original tariff expiry date.
1. The newly released Independent Monitoring Boards (IMB) 2025 National Annual Report highlights the ongoing psychological crisis facing people serving IPP sentences and others on long sentences.

1, Changes to IPP Licence Terminations start 1st June 2026 On Monday, vital changes to IPP licence lengths come into effect, creating clear 2 year review points & pathways to termination. Please see the attached document, for more information on the new process.

If you have a loved one that has appealed their IPP sentence but was unsuccessful. Please get in contact with the CCRC. If it is easier for you guys we can send you the relevant forms out to you. There is a certain criteria to meet the CCRC’s fresh hold. So some case may not be considered.

The IPP sentence was abolished in 2012, but for thousands of families, the sentence has never ended. Yesterday, we are bringing the reality to the doorsteps of power. We are launching the IPP Constituency Map live from our exhibition in David Lammy’s constituency.
IPP License Changes become Law. Yesterday, the Sentencing Act 2026 officially received Royal Assent and became law. While the government still refuses to "re-sentence" everyone on an IPP, they have shortened the license length further. Here are the three critical changes that have been made:

1, IPP Update: The Sentencing Bill moves to the Commons On the 12th January the Sentencing Bill was agreed by the House of Lords and has been passed back to the House of Commons for the next stage. The only amendment to be included is Lord Timpson’s (see photo attached)

18 years in prison for a 2.5-year tariff and STILL no release date. Today at #PMQs, I told the Prime Minister about Jimmy, the son of Shipley constituents Mike and Sue. I called on the PM to help put an end to the injustices caused by IPP sentences and support Jimmy’s Parents to get him home.
Well done to Jimmy’s family in getting this raised and receiving a direct answer from the PM and a massive thank you to @annalouisedixon MP for highlighting the ongoing struggle and fight of the IPP sentence. Only an appropriate resentencing process will end this trauma.
