Well it turned out to be a great day for a picnic on Saturday and we had a great showing of students, faculty, staff, and families at the end of summer picnic. A big thanks to everyone that helped bringing food and games and to all those that helped by setting up, grilling, or cleaning up.

Chemistry is excited to introduce our newest faculty member Dr. James Howard to UofL with a seminar tomorrow Friday August 21 @ 4 pm in the chemistry building room LL16. Come by and get to know more about his background, prior work, and vision for his research and work here at UofL.

Hoping everyone had a good FDOC. Wanted to announce a little event for those in chemistry happening this Saturday. We are doing a little welcome back picnic for the department feel free to join all we ask is you bring a snack or drink to share. (First year doing this so please be kind)

Consider donating to the Raise Some L Campaign so the outreach work that Dr. Balabanoff and others in the department do can continue with the local community. www.givecampus.com/campaigns/62...

Every year the department gives out the George R. Pack award to the student with the best dissertation in the last year. Last year Dr. Sashil Chapagain won the award. This is the sort of thing you'd be supporting with a donation to the Raise Some L campaign. www.givecampus.com/campaigns/62...

Every year we host our Derby Lecture where we invite a prominent member of the chemistry community to come join us for the Kentucky Derby and provide a lecture for the public to enjoy. If you would like to donate so our students can do more of these events: www.givecampus.com/campaigns/62...

The Society of Undergraduate Chemists hosts a liquid nitrogen ice cream social event every year. This year they decided to take it campus wide to great success. Your donations help support our students doing activities like these. Donate to Raise Some L. www.givecampus.com/campaigns/62...

Time to Raise some L. No gift is too small. Take some time to donate to our wonderful campus and all the fantastic faculty staff and students. This year we will match the first $300 in donations ffor double the impact. nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com?url=https%3A...

Congratulations to Professor Buchanan on celebrating 50 years as a member of the @acs.org In that time new elements were made, lithium ion batteries started powering the world, and OLEDs were developed for your screens. Join us in the chemistry department to be a part of the next 50 years.

Chem Fact Friday: Charred oak barrels add flavor as lignin breaks down and seasonal cycles push whiskey in and out of wood. This releases vanillin and other flavoring agents that make whiskey what it is. Chem in every sip. 🥃 What local chem should we discover next? #chemfacts #ChemistryinKentucky

Meet Mabel, she's a cuddly one that is a bit awkward and a little anxious (me too Mabel). Mabel is the pet of one of our Chem 201 students this semester and is hopefully helping him out with homework.
