Spent 90 minutes on the phone with my husband this morning and neither of us remembered it's our wedding anniversary 🤣🤣 Managing a big international move is inherently antithetical to romance

They don't build library systems like this anymore: inside the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris in 1938, a librarian stands next to a pneumatic tube, holding a reader's call slip requesting access to printed materials (Jacques Boyer/Roger-Viollet) 🗃️

Our time in Milan is coming to an end and the husband has written a lovely goodbye to it 💔 When I moved here I thought nowhere could ever replace Rome in my heart, and it hasn't - but I've enjoyed it so much more than I ever expected. And I fear my daughter is a mini sciura-in-waiting

Today's the day that I leave, after five fantastic years, our wonderful home in Milan and return to Paris. I might never l live in Italy again so after 15 years there in total I hope you can forgive me for feeling emotional enough for a photo dump and memories of the best job I've ever had

At the storage annex of the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Versailles, loading up a van with works* requested by readers in the library on the rue de Richelieu in Paris in 1938 (Jacques Boyer; Roger-Viollet) *Just look at that basket – there's definitely at least one person hidden in there 🗃️

5 anni a Milano! 2021-2026, arrival /departure photos with two icons of milanesità (Esselunga & the San Siro) off back to Paris again next week alas (I don't expect much sympathy, to be clear)

close-up selfie of a white woman in giant red glasses in front of a brick supermarket with Esselunga Via Washington on the wall in big white lettersthe same woman in a scooter helmet on a cream Vespa in front of San Siro Stadium

Fun with multi-lingual children: Aged about 6, kiddo produced a little rhyme in French to express that something was really simple: 'Facile fastoche, mains dans les poches!' Oh, I asked, what's that? She replied: it's the French for Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

Spent a few hours clearing out kiddo's bedroom preparatory to the move This basically means saying oh my god what the fuck is this over and over again while throwing away hundreds of euros of broken stuff you were once implored to buy

My dept is about to be reduced to 3 people covering 3 separate disciplines. The 25 PhD students will be left bereft of adequate supervision numerically and in terms of expertise. The government has decided that they should have no recourse (music to my university’s ears).

'Read it on a substantial train delay – alongside the promises made to students when the Office for Students (OfS) was created – it is something much worse. It is the formal expiry of the deal that was supposed to make marketisation safe for the people paying for it.' 2/2

Managed to restrain my intense desire to sew kiddo's baptism dress for this weekend (really, really not practical with an international house move) but am making a hair ornament and trimmings for her dress from leftover scraps of silk organza from my wedding dress back in 2013

Blush pink organza scraps including a fabric rose and a headband, along with scissors, needle and thread etc lying on a wooden table

Excited to have received my first book-club spam email promising that readers are keen to learn more about the imperial and colonial aspects of Italy in the First World War! I feel like a real author now 😍🤣
