This is true, and I think it frightens people? Because accepting it means accepting that there is a whole big world out there that you will never *really* understand. It's like being confronted with the fact that you will die before experiencing 99.9% of what life has to offer.

the thing monolinguals don't understand is that it is literally impossible to accurately translate everything. all translations are fundamentally rewrites of the original author's work and you can either accept that or bust out Genki I and II and start studying

I will frequently consider the letterer when I translate manga--use shorter synonyms if the speech balloon is skinny, render an SFX or background word as two words if it appears on separate sides of the frame, etc. but I'm just guessing. it would be so much better if we could communicate.

hotter take: TLs and letterers should be encouraged to cooperate (not be siloed off), since our respective outputs are two intertwined halves of the whole. instead of having to find each other on social media to send sneaky DMs to improve the work. but no, that could lead to labor solidarity! 😮

You come into my restaurant and you place an order, not just for meat buns, but for a specific Chinese woman’s meat buns. Your grandmother’s. So I learn Chinese and fly to China, where she gives me the recipe. Months later I return to find you warm and comfortable in your chair at the table.

I could write volumes about the Orientalism inherent in expecting translated Asian texts to be somehow intrinsically different in vocabulary and metre to native English. They're not foreign and exotic to local readers, why on earth would you want them to be different for you if you want authenticity
