FWIW, I don’t think the major problem in my field, or related ones, is that people need to move faster & produce more. I read a lot of papers as part of the job, and I’m increasingly convinced we’d benefit from fewer papers and better ones, not more mediocre work produced ever more “efficiently.”

Saving SBE starts before the bill is written. SBE needs a distinct FY27 appropriation. If your sch. is on the list, get a group of colleagues to meet w your House/Sen. offices. Esp. for Republican seats, direct constituent comms matter. Timeline/templates/updates: www.paigeamormino.com/pages/9337

Right now, NSF SBE does not have its own separate line of funding in the FY2027 budget structure. This matters because if SBE is not specifically protected ...

Surprise, surprise. The party hell-bent on destroying the social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental fabric of the US doesn't want experts studying "how social, economic, political, cultural and environmental forces affect the lives of people."
The NSF 2027 budget has noted that they will close out the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Science Program (SBE). This is not a good thing. nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/FY-202...

SPSP is crazy. So many presentations on climate change and environment, yet folks aren’t allowed to take the leftover lunches without tickets because all leftover lunches “must” be thrown away 🤔 Anyways is you see me, say hi! #SPSP2026

Update: My contract won't be cancelled due to an internal fund. This is a personal relief after weeks of uncertainty! Still thinking about: how answering deep questions in basic science often takes years, and how much we are losing now in talent, infrastructure, and intellectual freedom
Welp. I'm a postdoc whose NIH funding source has just been cancelled in a mass grant termination targeting Harvard. We've been using these funds to study how puberty affects the brain and adolescent mental health.
New report shows that NIH grants fueled $95 billion in economic activity and 407,782 jobs in 2024. That's not to mention the countless lives that biomedical research has saved. Show me a better investment than that. www.forbes.com/sites/michae...

New meta-analysis of experiments of social media use reduction finds no evidence that reducing social media use improves mental wellness: www.nature.com/articles/s41... I've only taken a quick look thus far but this replicates my own meta-analysis from last year. Always nice to see.
