Jesus, Ezra. That isn't what happened at all. Rufo did not "try to figure out if" it's true." He gleefully amplified the lie, then offered a bounty to anyone who could retroactively "prove" it. It spurred death threats. Thousands will soon be deported because of it. Many of them will die.
Their goal is to institutionalize & legitimize the fascist turn, not unlike the earlier "viewpoint diversity" initiative that was designed to permanently embed discredited fascist & theocratic ideas in the university.

Critical fabulation is not a one-size-fits-all practice. It is not a historical practice of punking the reader into believing falsehoods.
Hartman offers countless examples in her work beyond "Venus in Two Acts" (2008), and so do scholars Marisa Fuentes, Jules Gill-Peterson, Jessica Marie Johnson, and a few others. Not everyone can pursue critical fabulation, nor should they.
One additional comment: critical fabulation is about the Black feminist praxis of an ethics of care.
It is about leaning into the violence of the archives to offer alternative narratives that matter. It is about recognizing and discussing the silences and violence, allowing those resonances to be in all their messiness.
Critical fabulation requires an intimate knowledge of what is in and what is not in the archives. It means having a deep engagement with scholarship. It is not about making up fictitious histories. I am so tired of people failing to understand that. Lorde, hilfe.
It is 2026, and people still think Saidiya Hartman and Natalie Zemon Davis invented historical information in their works. I am by no means an expert on critical fabulation, but it is not a practice about making up historical information.
