Trying to imagine pitching this movie 50 years ago: “So this guy from apartheid goes to America and cons his way to collecting half a trillion dollars and buys a President with it. Then he starts to order Congress around from his computer which is actually a portable telephone.”

Last year, Lake Forest, Illinois displayed a menorah for the 8 nights of Hanukkah. This year, the city has decided to only display the menorah for a few hours. Removing the menorah, a symbol of hope and resilience, sends a bad message: that Jewishness is something to be hidden away.

Comparativists like me need to read more social theory. What sorts of political forces ARE these? The value of elections and laws is derived from some theory of the state and society. The backsliders' theories aren't liberal democratic ones -- but what they represent is the open question 4/4
