🧵The 'Magna Via' was the medieval and early-modern road eastwards out of Halifax. It was part of the main route to Wakefield and came to be known as the 'Wakefield Gate'. With the arrival of carriages and carts two by-passes were built to the north (the

This is so perfect a red rose I can hardly believe it grew outdoors on a bush in my garden. A big success for #VelvetFragrancia, planted as a bare-root, own-root twig last year, and a survivor of the severe (for DC) freeze that killed #MargaretMerril and #CharlesDarwin. #RoseWednesday #SeptemberRose

🧵The likes of Reform, Restore and the whole bloody lot of them are nothing new. For some forty years at the end of the twentieth century the Tories had there very own version, the Monday Club. The Conservative Monday Club was a right-wing British political pressure group formed on 1
🌱Bought “Pier’s Ginger” Dahlia from Swan Island Dahlias. They advise cutting them when they get to be 3 to 4 feet tall. I forgot, or maybe it just shot up while I wasn’t looking. This is now about 8 feet tall. Hoping for at least one bloom before frost! #latebloomer
Now this is good news!!
Researchers at Kobe University created a nanostructured coating that creates vivid, glossy colors. The coating provides a uniform and long-lasting color that is unaffected by the protective layers typically used for cars, planes and architectural structures. https://bit.ly/3UOIx2P 💡 ⚛️ 🧪
So it turns out that one gaping defect in AI is a very human failing-confirmation bias. Except it’s worse because we don’t anticipate it, and it reinforces our own bias even if it’s not being obviously sycophantic.
Flawed thinking. Not enough humans in the process of doing the critical vetting. AI is incredibly biased. In a space with conflicting data, it will pick what fits, and ignore what doesn't. I think it's a fundamental flaw caused by how they've been trained. It's why it's easy to flip their decisions
Excellent post on the vile Russell Vought. "Russell Vought is the kind of man who would deprive every child in America of a drug that saved his own daughter’s life because it advances his own."
The road to hell is paved with insecure beta male bureaucrats who are scared of what they are too incurious to understand & too dumb to change. Alas. They are adept at administrative abuse. Let's end a bloodless coup by an IRL Dilbert character. Vote! rasmussenretorts.substack.com/p/russell-vo...

🌱🧪Something like the bizarre disease in this article may have happened to one of my rose bushes . It just affected one branch and hasn’t recurred since I cut it off. I had suspected some genetic mutation but now it seems something stranger.
Phytoplasmas are pathogens that can disrupt how plants grow. This study shows how one of their proteins can block the machinery that controls flower development, causing normal flowers (left) to turn into leaf-like structures (right)! 🧪 www.jbc.org/article/S002...
🌱My #sixonSaturday -a little wistful as the breeze cools and rain begins. Truly a moment for the dahlias, but they aren’t the only show in town!
Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
Well, at least that makes it all crystal clear. Also sets CBS up for its own ruinous lawsuits.
If Bari Weiss hires Maria Bartiromo, I’d rather stick a hot poker in my eye than watch CBS News.
I'm in Whitley Bay and it is absolutely lush. Was going to go for a quick walk before conference opening night drinks but got completely seduced and stayed paddling till it got dark. The North East is absolutely gorgeous.
