Tapinoma magnum is a Mediterranean native that has been spreading northward in Europe as a noxious invasive, outcompeting locally native species. I was able to photograph a laboratory colony in Freiburg this week. Ths species is polymorphic in the worker caste.

The first half of the #IUSSI26 was buzzing! So much science, discussion, debates, and ideas exchange - but the most important friendly chats and coffees while brewing new collaboration. This event turned out to be a great celebration of science and international collaboration 🐝🐜👏
Thank you all organizers #IUSSI2026 and attendants, I really enjoyed talking about the fascinating way queens live and die! 🐜🇨🇴🎉 #cienciacriolla

Three days to go @uni-freiburg.de #iussi26
Researchers, students, and social insect enthusiasts from across the globe will soon gather in Freiburg, Germany, to exchange ideas, present exciting new discoveries, and build collaborations that will shape the future of social insect research. Are you ready? See you in Freiburg!
I have been tasked by @markjfbrown.bsky.social with making sure that all social insect groups go up on the map. If for some inexplicable reason you're not yet on the map, be warned - I might ambush you in the IUSSI poster session 🤣 #IUSSI2026
The countdown is on! Just 10 days until IUSSI 2026. The congress will bring together researchers, students, and professionals from around the world to share the latest discoveries, foster collaborations, and celebrate advances in the biology of ants, bees, termites, wasps, and other social insects.
Hey Everyone, We have an almost final agenda for the international #IUSSI26 congress on our website. A detailed program will follow soon. Check it out: iussi2026.org/program/

🐜 New in @cp-iscience.bsky.social: We show that leaf-cutting ant OR gene expression is colony-specific and that it changes after exposure to non-nestmate odours. We think that this means they tune their antennae for nestmate recognition. www.cell.com/iscience/ful... #Ants #Olfaction #Behavior (1/2)

Our new paper is out in Frontiers in Zoology on the molecular basis of parental care. We show that in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides, extensive molecular reprogramming already occurs before offspring hatch. Congrats to Julius! #Nicrophorus

This is a first: 2 manuscripts I co-authored were accepted in one day, and 3 in total in April. Might sound like a brag but all manuscripts have been in the works forever, with quite a few rejections. So this is the overall pattern: 1 paper in 2025 0 papers in 2024 0 papers in 2023 1 paper in 2022 🤪
Once upon a time I just admired nudis and sea slugs. But it was not enough. Now apparently I'm creating an R package to celebrate their colour palettes? 😅 First up, my Sydney fave, Hypselodoris bennetti. #rstats #nudibranch #dataviz 🦑🐙🧪 #marinelife #invertebrates
