Gentle reminder that archaeologists prime feckin role is to speak ill of the dead... Look at the absolute state of that inhumation. What were they thinking? Were they glad to get rid of them or what? They must have been an awful bollox altogether.

Cf. Síd/Shee placenames/mounds; Giants graves/Wedge Tombs; Diarmuid and Grainne's Beds/Portal Tombs; Plantations, Early Modern Landscape Enclosure, the Famine, all have large parts to play in people forgetting the social memory/landscape they used to live and travel within.

Interesting fact? The idea of ringforts being “fairy forts” is a very modern phenomenon, post 1800. People knew well they were Gaelic residences up until 17th century, after which they were “forgotten” (similarly crannogs, used until 1602). Societies actively “forget” no longer useful information.

Apropos of nothing: The greatest trick West Cork ever pulled was convincing the rest of Cork that it was part of Cork. Its got Non Cork character, is far too beautiful, softly rugged and lit by magic hour light. Its South Kerry wearing a false moustache.
