Pic of author Eden Royce  with her morning coffee. She is wearing eyeglasses with dark tortoiseshell frames and her hair is tied up in a white bandanna with read and blur flowers. She is looking at the camera and sipping out of a white coffee mug with the iconic Shirley Jackson Awards logo: black cat-eye glasses over the red lettering.

The book I didn't know I needed to read right now but 100% needed to read right now. Wow! Thanks, @anneursu.bsky.social. Recommending this one everywhere! (Really! My doctor on Monday said she has an 11 year old daughter and wanted book recs and I held up your book and said, ooooh, this one!)

I'm a huge fan of Eden Royce, a talented Gullah Geechee author! I had the privilege of speaking with her previously and although we couldn't meet in person due to her residing abroad, our conversation was a wonderful opportunity to share my appreciation for her writing. Check the ALT: "Root Magic".

This book was definitely a GREAT READ! It introduces a lot of Gullah Geechee folklore and spiritual elements. Highly recommended.

"Root Magic" by Eden Royce is a captivating historical fiction novel that delves into the world of Gullah magic and culture in 1960s South Carolina. The story follows 11-year-old Jezebel "Jez" Turner, who, after her grandmother's passing, begins to learn the secrets of root magic from her uncle.

As Jez navigates her newfound powers, she must also contend with the harsh realities of racism and prejudice in her small community. With the help of her twin brother, Jay, and her uncle, Jez learns to harness her magic to protect herself and her loved ones from those who seek to harm them.

Throughout the book, Royce weaves together elements of African American folklore, history, and culture, creating a rich and immersive narrative that's both informative and entertaining. "Root Magic" is a powerful and moving tale of self-discovery, family, and the enduring power of tradition and culture.

Last night, HARRIET TELLS THE TRUTH won the SCBWI Sid Fleischman Award for Humor!! FINALLY--I'm officially funny! I'm so grateful to the judges and SCBWI, as well as my editor and the whole HarperCollins Team, and of course Dung Ho, whose illustrations crack ME up!
