Set out to write a LinkedIn post (I know, I know) about @maximumfun.org and the Max Fun Drive. It ended up getting more philosophical and heartfelt than I expected and I thought you might like to read it.

The more time I spend making podcasts in collaboration with the Maximum Fun network, the more delighted and, frankly, relieved I am to be doing so. This in contrast to working exclusively on my own or as part of a large media organization. Let me tell you why. All shows at Maximum Fun, including the ones I created and host (Depresh Mode with John Moe, Sleeping with Celebrities) are owned by their creators. If I decided to move to a different network, I could, no problem. If I wanted to make a book or TV show based on my work, no permissions or negotiations necessary. This gives me legal and financial freedom, yes, but it also engenders creative freedom. I can chase an idea I believe in and make it happen without any alignment to corporate goals or the whims of a board of directors or a private equity overlord. That’s the way you’d ideally like to get your content as a consumer. Doesn’t always happen that way. It does at Max Fun. Maximum Fun is a worker-owned co-op. They have employee/owners, who have a stake in how things work. They are empowered. And that’s why any interaction you have with them feels human. Because it is. Again, I don’t work there, I’m not an employee/owner. I just partner with them for distribution, ads, web stuff, fundraising efforts, all the stuff that is not what I do best, stuff I needn’t sweat because it’s taken care of. On top of that, I work with producers who are incredibly smart and talented and valuable collaborators. The third leg of the stool is listeners. While we do get some ads, the VAST majority of Max Fun’s revenue and my revenue is from people who hear the shows, enjoy them, recognize that they cost time and money and effort and talent, and are willing to foot the bill. When money comes in, Max Fun takes some to run the network, the rest goes to owners so we can try to make a living and keep making shows. And yeah, we offer bonus content and gifts, but that’s not why people give. They give because they want to be a part of …
