G&L CLF Research Espada

Leo Fender designed the Espada guitar in the late 60s as another dual-pickup guitar to slot in Fender's lineup next to the Telecaster. The design was shelved, however, and the guitar went unreleased for over 50 years until designers at G&L found the blueprints and decided to release it themselves under the CLF Research moniker. (If you didn't know, Leo was the L in G&L. Also, his first name was Clarence, which explains where CLF Research came from.)

The Espada is shaped like a Telecaster, but the design looks smoother somehow. It's got two MFD split-coil pickups, and they're controlled by a volume knob, a treble cut knob, a bass cut knob, a 3-way switch, and a series / parallel switch. There's also an onboard preamp with a 3-way switch (off / on / on with high boost). The bridge is Leo's Saddle Lock hardtail.

@weirdguita.rs What kind of electric guitar is good for somebody with huge hands? Fender is too narrow. LP is ok, but I am thinking of something different. Say between $500-$1000 new.

Roland G-505

If you wanted to experiment with Roland's guitar synths in the 80s and didn't want to go all out with the wild G-707, you could get a guitar like this G-505. It's basically a Strat-style electric guitar with a little offset flavor thrown in. It's got three single-coils in the Strat configuration, and they're controlled by a 5-way blade switch that's been moved to the pickguard. The synth pickup is jammed in the area between the bridge pickup and the Strat-style trem. There are 4 knobs that are arranged in the Les Paul diamond shape (and even have LP-style knobs), along with two black knobs and a 3-way switch over to the side. The first two knobs are a volume control and a tone control for the magnetic pickups. Next to those are controls for balance and the VCF cutoff frequency. The two black knobs are controls for the LFO's resonance and depth, and the 3-way switch is a mode selector.

You see, all of the electronics are mounted on a module that slides into the guitar's body and is held in place by magnets. Here are a few of the modules: the two humbucker one that's in the first picture; a HSS setup with one volume, two tones, and a 5-way blade switch; a Tele setup with two single-coils, a volume, a tone, and a 3-way blade switch; and a Strat setup like the HSS setup, but with a single-coil in the bridge. There's also one with two P90s available, but it's not in this picture.

Maton Fyrbyrd 1220 12-string

The Maton Fyrbyrd FB1220 is a rare 12-string electric from Australia. It's shaped like a Strat and has three single-coil pickups. They're controlled by a volume knob in the normal spot and two tone knobs above the strings. Each pickup also has its own sliding on/off switch, located below the pickups. You don't see too many 12-strings with trems, but this one actually has a Bigsby. The headstock is split 6/6, but the treble side is slotted and the tuners go in from the side, like you'd see on a classical guitar.

Wright SoloEtte

Here's a picture of Australian-American astronaut Andy Thomas that was taken aboard the Mir space station sometime around 1997. He's playing a Wright SoloEtte travel guitar. It's headless, and the body is shaped like one of those tickets that come on a roll. The 3/3 slotted headstock is actually at the end of the body (making it a tailstock, I guess). There's a thin metal frame that attaches to the body and gives it the silhouette of an acoustic guitar.

Stratosphere 6

Stratosphere guitars were made in Springfield, Missouri some time in the mid 1950s. They had three models: a 6 string, a 12 string, and a doubleneck 12/6. Here's their 6 string. It's roughly Les Paul-shaped, but it's got a big round end and a narrow waist that doesn't really flare back out where the neck meets the body. The upper part of the body actually comes to a point by the neck instead of rounding off.

It's got two single-coil pickups that are angled in an upside-down V shape. The bridge pickup looks like a normal Strat-style, but the neck pickup has six slots cut into it that follow the path of the strings. They're controlled by a volume knob, a tone knob, and a 3-way blade switch. The neck inlays are red stripes, and the 3/3 split headstock has a little point at the end to go with the Stratosphere badge.

Concord Mohan Veena

Here's a picture of Indian musician V. M. Bhatt sitting cross-legged on stage. He's playing his version of a mohan veena.

While there was a version of the mohan veena floating around back in the 1950s, the modern version wasn't invented until Bhatt found a classical guitar at his parents' music school and modified it. The one Bhatt is playing in the picture was made by Concord, and it's got a flattop body with two F-holes. The headstock has 8 tuners and is split 4/4. Four of those strings are melody strings, and four are drone strings. There are also 13 sympathetic strings. The tuners for those run along the top of the neck, and there are pins on the neck that turn those strings towards the tailpiece.
