This is bullshit. I haven't had a drink in over 12 years and I still go out, even to bars. Alcohol is not healthy to consume and, while I'd never stop anyone else from a tipple, less drinking overall is better for us as a society. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/01/s...

I agree strongly with this -- in that difficult moment, the possibility of collective effort was conceivable. Not everybody felt it, but many did. I think the political class did not like this one bit.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

tonight, I am mystified by the apparently global impulse to return to the thing/person/situation causing pain/distress, particularly online where the option to fully disconnect exists blocking, muting, even starting over entirely are all reasonable options & alternatives to repeatedly crashing out

can we sometimes be asking "what qualifies this guy to speak on this subject?" or has that ship sailed

I dunno but it should probably be a bigger deal that the White House announced it wants to slap a 100% tariff on drug imports at the same time it is eliminating Medicare drug subsidies. And we’re talking about critical life-saving drugs like insulin, blood thinners, antibiotics, and heart meds.
