The Smoke was a British pop, freakbeat, and psych group formed in York in 1965, originally performing under the name The Shots. Their 1967 track, "My Friend Jack," became a major hit in Germany, reaching No.2 on the chart, but it was banned from airplay in the UK by the BBC for the drug references in the lyrics. Because of the heavy UK censorship, The Smoke focused on the European market, especially Germany, where they achieved massive success and toured extensively. The group continued to perform and release singles until they officially disbanded in 1976. Drummer Geoff Gill later found success as a songwriter and producer for the disco group Boney M.

This live album was recorded in 1961 at the famous Spanish Castle Ballroom between Seattle and Tacoma. "I Idolize You," a cover of the 1961 Ike & Tina Turner song, was performed by vocalist "Little" Gail Harris, who was only 15 years old at the time of the recording.

The Fabulous Wailers (originally The Nightcaps) were a rock and roll band from Tacoma, Washington, formed in late 1958 and active until the late 1960s. They are widely considered the first successful garage band to emerge from the Pacific Northwest, paving the way for groups like The Sonics, Paul Revere & the Raiders, The Bards, The Lollipop Shoppe, The Kingsmen and many others.

The Cake was a trio of teenage New York singers Jeanette Jacobs, Barbara Morillo, and Eleanor Barooshian formed in 1966 and active until 1968. In 1967, they were discovered by the notorious producers Charles Greene and Brian Stone (Greene & Stone) at the Ondine Discotheque in NYC. They quickly relocated to Los Angeles, signed to Decca, and started recording. Their debut single was "Baby, That's Me," written by Jack Nitzsche and Jackie DeShannon (originally recorded by The Fashions in 1964 and Leslie Gore in 1965). The production of the track, arranged by Harold Battiste, was heavily influenced by the Wall of Sound technique created by Nitzsche and Phil Spector. Billboard rated the song number 64 on their list of 100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time.
