I stayed up late last night trying to put together something to honor Tony Stella’s passing, what it meant to work with him, and all he meant to so many of us in the broader film community. A true legend, and an absolutely heartbreaking loss.
We’re all heartbroken that Tony Stella is gone, and so grateful for all he contributed to BWDR over the years. Here’s our loving appreciation of Tony and his art from editor-in-chief @chadperman.bsky.social
I feel really fortunate to have been able to interact with Tony briefly on several occassions, will miss him terribly www.brightwalldarkroom.com/2026/05/07/t...
Film is My Absolute Obsession: On Tony Stella
The world won't be the same without Tony Stella in it, but his spirit, integrity, and passionate love of movies lives on in the work he left behind.

Tony’s last message to me, about a month ago, proudly declaring he’d keep painting analog in the age of AI slop.
Tony Stella was a legend. Few can live up to the pure artistry he could express with his work. The world of film and art is lesser without him and he will be missed beyond compare. May he RIP.
Artwork by Tony Stella
Tony Stella made me want to be better. In an endless landscape of homogenous digital work, it was like oh yeah, this is the guy to try and keep pace with. Goddamn, what a loss.
Crushed to read the news that Tony Stella has passed, a truly phenomenal and prolific artist, one of my absolute favorites
Wesley Burt's Taskmaster Thunderbolt concepts are some of the coldest Tasky designs I've seen. What a monster of a talent.
We all have forests on our minds. Forests unexplored, unending. Each one of us gets lost in the forest, every night, alone.
Another one for Saturday’s show! Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), gouache painting
FILM SCHOOL II: THE RETURN next week at Giant Robot Gallery! RIP to the great Tony Scott, True Romance (1993) film study in gouache
The artist is Jun Suemi (末弥純). The illustration comes from the cyberpunk special issue of SF Magazine, published in November 1986.

In other news, I've just recently finished artwork for several shows, the first of which opens in San Francisco this weekend at Ryan Graff Contemporary! artweek.com/events/unite...
I also hope folks can keep an eye out for my fellow coworkers, all incredible artists, going through the same thing right now, as they individually choose to share
I haven't been able to keep up with all the incredible outreach and wonderful support from so many people, I'm grateful, thank you all very much
Another artist Marvel let go today was Visual Development Director @andyparkart.bsky.social ! Which is wild as Andy is a staple! Andy was responsible for the visual direction of the Guardian of the Galaxy movies, the designs of Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Shang-Chi, latest Thor, and so much more!
Here’s just ONE of the artists Marvel Studios let go today: Wesley Burt, a brilliant veteran, one of the best in the industry. He made the viral Fantastic Four Valentine’s day card! He was also pivotal for the look of many films and shows like for example Loki, Black Panther, Avengers and so on!
I’m sure there’s someone who has worded it better than me but the idea of MARVEL, a universe born from comics has no problem laying off their ENTIRE team of visual artists …

Part of the bloodbath today 🫡
Can’t believe the news, Disney shutting down the marvel. vis dev department. This teams art made them billions and billions of dollars, but it seems that paying a handful or so of fulltime illustrators is simply too much to ask these days.
the irony of having a one-on-one HR layoff meeting in the conference room with my Loki mural on it
Part of the bloodbath today 🫡
Devastated to hear the entire Marvel Studios’s Visual Development team has been let go. This was my old home but more importantly, the home of so many incredible artists and peers. Absolutely heartbreaking 😔 Sending all my impacted peers my love and support. Please reach out if you need anything!
